Digital sovereignty refers to digital technology being under the control of the government where it's used. One of the primary motivations for it is being able to much more easily access user data on cloud services and limit use of encryption. It's wrongly conflated with privacy.
Services with end-to-end encryption protect user data regardless of where it's hosted. Encryption can also be extended to protecting more metadata. This is a far better approach to privacy than each country needing their own services so only a country's own government has access.

Flock and its investors tell the public they want to catch people who kidnap children.
They tell customers they can track people, classify behaviour, predict what certain kinds of people may do next and identify who is or isn’t behaving as expected.
Child safety is the public story. Surveillance, behavioural prediction and obedience is the truth.

Microsoft is working on a Windows 11 age-verification feature that could tell apps a user’s age range without sharing their birthday.
Windows would handle verification and tell an app whether the user is a child, teenager, or adult, instead of each app collecting a date of birth.
Microsoft says the actual birthday will not be shared and will keep more personal information private.
The feature could help block mature content, limit certain features, or apply age restrictions in apps and games.

GrapheneOS is partnered with Motorola Mobility which is Lenovo's mobile division.
In 2011, Motorola was split into Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012 and sold it to Lenovo in 2014. Motorola Mobility is the company selling smartphones and tablets.
Motorola Solutions is a separate company. It's the continuation of the government contract side of Motorola selling radios, cameras and now drones. Both share the same brand for historical reasons but are entirely different things. We're working with the smartphone company, not the radio/camera one.
People regularly get the companies mixed up due to both using the Motorola brand. We're clarifying this since people keep asking if GrapheneOS is going to run on Motorola Solutions radios or about their government contracts. That's a different company from the Motorola selling smartphones/tablets.

🚨 Dropbox user accounts have been hacked... AGAIN 🚨
This week Dropbox admitted that attackers had broken into around 5,000 of its accounts, forcing the company to inform its users about an "unauthorized access".
In this incident, authentication on accounts without two-factor authentication was bypassed and attackers could view and download stored data.
Worryingly, this is not the first time the cloud storage provider has suffered a hack and major security incident. ‼️
Key takeaway:
🔐 ALWAYS use 2FA
