For those who don't know, the past few years I've been producing electronic music out of my bedroom. This is something I've mostly kept quiet and never shared as it was just my thing (and I was too nervous to share my work...). But eventually, I started sharing music via remix contests under the artist name TURIYA on @SKIOMusic. I wanted to be able to work with vocals and to see how my music held up. Well... tonight I just found out that my remix for @ILLENIUM song "Back To You" was selected for 3rd place out of 996 submissions 🥹 I'm so very humbled. Never in a million years did I think that my music held a candle to these guys standards and I want to give a massive thanks to @ILLENIUM, @SKIOMusic, and @warnerrecords for providing this opportunity! It means the world to us producers out there who are just starting out ❤️ If you want to listen to my remix, you can check it out here: skiomusic.com/carlstrom/ille… Thanks a million fam. You are all awesome!

SoundCloud seems to claim the right to train on people's uploaded music in their terms. I think they have major questions to answer over this. I checked the wayback machine - it seems to have been added to their terms on 12th Feb 2024. I'm a SoundCloud user and I can't see any emails from them alerting me to this. I certainly wouldn't have accepted. My question to SoundCloud is: does this include generative AI models? If so, I'll remove my music and would encourage others to do the same. Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt before removing my music. Hoping they address this asap.

The Department of "Justice" has once again criminalized the developers of an app that restores financial privacy. The way to fix this it to make money private by default. Privacy must never be "exceptional," or they will make it criminal.

This dude is the real deal. Straight shooter. Incredible artist. Go and vote. It takes 5 minutes and could help bring some incredible new music into the world 🎶
If someone gave you $50,000 tomorrow what would you do? Would you buy a car, maybe a house? Go on an extravagant vacation or waste it all on a 3 day bender? Or would you invest it into your business? Here’s what I would do: 🧵👇

Web3 is not just about NFTs and crypto. it's about building a new decentralized internet that is more open, fair, and equitable. it's about giving people more control over their data and privacy. it's about creating new opportunities for everyone. it’s sovereignty. it’s provenance.

We are changing the game in data science by creating a platform where data scientists tackle real-world problems. But are these competitions just for show, or do we actually make a difference? Traditionally, big companies held data science competitions with massive prizes, making it tough for startups to join in. We noticed this gap and decided to level the playing field. Our platform is all about inclusivity and affordability. Here's the deal: we offer a variety of competitions, making high-level data science accessible to everyone. What's unique is our blockchain-powered AI marketplace. Over 30,000 data scientists contribute, and businesses can buy AI solutions starting from just $1,000. This democratizes access to advanced data science for small companies and startups. It's a win-win. Businesses get solutions without breaking the bank, and data scientists get to showcase their skills. Our competitions aren't just theoretical exercises. We’ve tackled real issues, like the LitCoin NLP Challenge, revolutionizing how biomedical insights are extracted. Another example is the Viral Tweets Prediction Challenge, creating a practical tool for predicting viral content on social media. These competitions offer a cost-effective alternative to hiring a full-time machine learning engineer. You get a global pool of ideas and only pay for what you need. Right now, we are hosting the GenAI challenge, addressing the challenge of distinguishing between AI-generated and human-generated texts. It's a chance for data scientists to showcase their skills, innovate, and contribute to something meaningful – and it's free to join! bitgrit isn't just a platform; it's a community driving progress in data science. We’re making sure the challenges of today lead to innovative solutions for tomorrow.

It's a sad day 🩶
It's hard to overstate the impact Friends had on my life, and I think my story is not an uncommon one. I thought it would be decades before the first "friend" passed away, and it would have been a sad day at that time. To hear the news of Matthew Perry's death just now is just really fucking sad. For so many of us who felt a little out-of-place (and let's be real, basically everyone feels this way to a certain extent), Friends was more than a TV show. It was like a literal replacement for a group of friends, except one where everyone was always laughing, always well intentioned. Like a warm safety blanket you could always escape to. Growing up in the 90s was a different time than today. Pop culture revolved around significantly fewer reference points. Today we have infinite tv shows, youtube channels, twitch streams, tiktoks, etc. It's hard to get 100s of millions of people watching the same thing, on the same wavelength. I miss those days. The show was far from perfect and there are reasons to be critical of it but the positive impact it had on my life and many others I know and have met can't be refuted. A few months ago I read Matthew's memoir and it's clear he had a troubled life, battling inner demons and serious addiction issues. As an addict myself it was eerily relatable. Addiction is a terrible disease and it's very difficult for non-addicts to understand. It made me happy that he seemed to be coming out of it towards the end, and found solace in helping others. Life is short. RIP Miss Chanandler Bong. You brought so much laughter to so many of us 💜🥲😔

NFTs that evolve based on Spotify streaming 🤌 I really love this concept. 5k streams -> unlock new song version. 10k streams -> upgrade to new artwork 100k streams -> lifetime access to shows or events. Shout out @jadynviolet for bringing this concept to life with his new project Raver Realm. Please go check it out. And @Xcelencia for leading the way with streaming-based evolving artwork on his last album. I think we're going to see more and more of this in music.

Don't think of Web3 as a replacement. Think of it as a way to add to what you're doing. Use it to add value, revenue and connection that couldn't exist before. Great example of this in music last week with @AllThingsGo - the biggest music festival in Washington DC. They used NFTs to generate: • $50k in extra revenue. • 10,000 sign-ups (25% of all attendees). • Created a sticky community ahead of next year. How did they do it? • A super-slick Web3 community platform (powered by @medallionfm) • A $60 "Season Pass" NFT that unlocked early access to the festival, free merch and other perks. • A $25 collectible "Line-up card" (Fun fact ... All Things Go released my first ever single more than ten years ago. Funny how things come around)
