I’ve seen this picture several times over the last few days, and every time it hits as hard as the first. The juxtaposition says everything. In the West, a woman can become an Archbishop. In Islam women are being reduced to anonymous figures buried beneath black, head-to-toe coverings. You couldn’t ask for a clearer illustration of two radically different visions of women’s place in society. And yet in the West, we’re constantly told we must embrace every culture as though every culture is interchangeable with our own, and as though there are no meaningful differences between them. Well, no. They’re not all the same. And I refuse to believe that treating women like this is something we should simply accept as normal or okay.
