Much of Britain’s problem lies with a political class whose ineptitude could only be absorbed by a nation at the very top of its game. We’re not there and we’re run by people who need to pretend we are.

This interview with @WilliamClouston is worth every minute of your time.
“We’re Running Out of Time” - William Clouston (@WilliamClouston)
Former SDP leader William Clouston joins me to discuss Britain’s political crisis and whether the growing demand for change risks becoming dangerously fragmented.
We discuss Portsmouth, Dover, mass immigration, the welfare state, and why Britain’s economic model and social trust are breaking down.
A fascinating conversation about duty, family, national identity, and whether Britain can rediscover a shared sense of purpose.

“We will abolish Metro Mayors, returning their economic powers and funding to local councils. We will return Metro Mayor policing powers to national and local structures, and will enhance local authority duties to cooperate.”

That yesterday’s air traffic control issue could plausibly have been either decrepit system failure or enemy action demonstrates that the era of vibes based national strategy is long dead. A serious re-engineering and rebuild of Britain is required.

Within 30 years, Britain has experienced 3 price shocks for their energy (2008, 2021, and 2022).
As you remember, these have dealt difficult times to many households and industries alike.
The worst part about it? It was all a choice.
Whitehall’s lanyard class opted for us to be an energy poor nation; carbon taxes and windfall levies make the sector unprofitable in hard times, therefore crushing our capacity to secure supply for ourselves.
This is no way to manage a nation’s energy.
Instead, the SDP would ensure that Central Energy holds 12 months worth of stockpiled supply to ensure energy security for the UK - no more putting Britain in precarity for the sake of net-zero.

People ask why the @SDPhq doesn’t get more cut through. Well, right now we’re small but growing. However curious comments like Tim’s are another reason. Big media accounts like Tim know we exist, but seem to like to send messages suggesting there’s nothing out there when we are.

This is who we are and what we believe in. We want to go to work and rebuild Britain for its people by focusing on three big things. There’s room on board for those who want the same. You are the hope you’re looking for. Join us.

The two causes of the housing crisis are denied by left and right for different reasons. The libertarian right deny the disastrous impact of abandoning state sector house building. The progressive left deny the impact of mass immigration. It explains their incapacity to solve it.

Announcing Sebastian Moore as our candidate for Gorton & Denton.
Our North West Chair, Sebastian has spent several years building our presence across the region and has made Manchester his home since returning from working abroad.
He had previously stood in Manchester Central in the 2024 election.

"The inflation of ground rents has been a national disgrace. Britons who saved for years to buy their home have been pushed to financial ruin by predatory rent-seekers." - @WilliamClouston
The SDP calls for full abolition of residential ground rents. Labour's £250 cap is a capitulation.

Excellent idea Katie. Hopefully you would back the @SDPhq and @SDPyouthUK petition to scrap the clinical training places cap that would allow us to train British people for much needed jobs and skills.

Hearing Reeves spout brainless free trade libertarianism - which has gutted British industry - is so depressing. Labour is still trapped in the ‘Britain as a shop’ + mass immigration model. It’s failed. Time to move to a more protectionist system which favours national capacity.

It’s a dangerous for the Tories and Reform. When a Tory jumps ship they weaken their former party and associate Reform with failure and betrayal. Real problem - both are stacked to the rafters with free trade libertarians who supported selling our national assets to foreigners…
Replying to @bencobley
It's a dangerous moment for the Tories.
And you can see that the team around Kemi Badenoch are conscious of this by appointing Nick Timothy to the position formerly occupied by Jenrick. If they lose a serious national conservative element, they will surely disappear as a serious political force.
The Sensibles, as the more cynical among them are keenly aware, rely on a more robust right-wing politics to cover them while they retain the Conservative label. But, as Chris points out, this coalition straddles the dividing lines of our politics at present: national conservative versus post-national liberal. It is politically and philosophically unsustainable.
And it has already failed in government in the period 2010-2024, leaving the post-national Establishment consensus hanging around like a bad smell.
Dangerous times for the Tories. Also for Reform and for Labour of course, but those are different stories.

Looking for a political home?
The SDP believes in public ownership of the essentials -energy, water, rail.
We believe in building enough homes and training enough doctors. We believe in far lower immigration, so wages can rise and communities can breathe. And we believe in a democracy where every vote actually matters.
Good people with serious ideas.
If you've been politically homeless for a while, you might just fit in here.
