Literacy isn't just a parent issue. It's a workforce issue! Business leaders: your future workforce is learning to read right now. Or it isn't. Only about a third of America's kids read proficiently. That's not just a problem for parents and teachers. It's a talent pipeline problem, and every employer will feel it. A child who can't read today is a worker you can't hire, an entrepreneur who never starts a company, a leader who never emerges. Ohio was just named America's #1 state for business by CNBC, and Governor DeWine has said literacy is critical to bringing companies here. He's right, and it's true in every state. Companies follow talent. How does America compete with China if most of our kids can't read proficiently? At Parents for Reading Justice, we've built a movement of parents demanding better reading instruction. Now we need business leaders at the table. You have the influence, the stake, and the voice that policymakers listen to. Let's make the United States #1 in reading. #Workforce #Literacy #ScienceOfReading #TalentPipeline @USChamber @JobsOhio @GovMikeDeWine

Accountability matters. Companies that are still trying to repackage and rebrand bad practices do not deserve a seat at the table. This isn’t knowing better and doing better. It feels more like letting the fox into the henhouse. At some point, we have to stop giving credibility to the very practices we’ve spent years trying to move away from.
We have got to do a better job vetting exhibitors and sponsors at science-of-reading conferences. Pioneer Valley Books was a sponsor at The Reading League’s 2026 conference. Yet they’re still selling Reading Recovery book bundles, Fountas & Pinnell-leveled readers, and promoting leveled texts for beginning readers. How does that align with the science of reading? When educators and parents walk through an exhibit hall, there’s an implied level of credibility. Whether intentional or not, we’re communicating that these are resources worth considering for classrooms. We can’t spend three days talking about moving away from ineffective reading practices while those same practices are being marketed right outside the sessions. Adding decodables to a catalog doesn’t erase everything else a company continues to promote. We need better vetting and more transparency about who gets a place at the table. #ScienceOfReading #ReadingRecovery #RightToRead #ParentsForReadingJustice

I met Lucy Calkins at The Reading League Conference, and I’ve been simmering on that moment ever since. I believe people can learn. I believe people can change. But when your work helped shape how an entire generation of teachers was taught to teach reading, learning something new isn’t the end of the story. It’s where the responsibility begins. So I wrote about it. And I still have questions: misspurcell.substack.com/p/i… Do you feel the same? Do you see it differently? What questions would you have asked? #LucyCalkins #BalancedLiteracy #ScienceOfReading #Reckoning #knowbetterdobetter

Parents are voters. School boards answer to voters. When one parent shows up at a board meeting, it's a comment. When 20 show up, it's a mandate. That's the power of the parent vote, and it's what we teach at Parents for Reading Justice. Ohio proves it. Parents organized, showed up, and demanded evidence-based reading instruction. The result? Kids are learning to read, and teachers finally have the training and tools to teach them. This isn't about politics. It's about showing up. Your school board works for you. Time to remind them. The Mississippi Marathon: a powerful reminder that real literacy change takes time, consistency, and a commitment to the work. One of the most memorable evenings of my life. 🌟 I sat across the table from Kelly Butler, alongside Hugh Catts, Tiffany Hogan, Margaret Goldberg, Jamie, John Hass, and Liz Hughes, listening to Kelly tell the story of how Mississippi turned around. It didn’t happen overnight. It took years of persistence, consistency, and a commitment to doing the work. And it all began with a single presentation by Reid Lyon in 1997. That story is the heart of our work at Parents for Reading Justice: slow but steady WINS the race. Over the past 10 years, we've worked to create meaningful change in our district and across our state. Now, we're taking that work national. 📚 Real literacy change is possible. But it takes time, collaboration, and a willingness to stay committed to the work. ALL school districts need to embrace the one or two really nerdy teachers that read 50 educational books a year or listen to podcasts on a daily or weekly basis. The ones with really good outcomes with their students year after year. I've heard too many stories from teachers on here that they are basically deemed the "difficult" teacher or are just sidelined in their district. Not all schools/districts do this, but far too many. This is a call to admin. It is perfectly fine if a teacher knows far more than you. Listen to them. Learn from them. Appreciate them. Put them in positions to help improve your district. Admin that do this are truly the best. It is about the kids. That is what we are all here for.

So much differentiation can live inside your everyday phonics routines, no separate lesson needed. Wiley Blevins joins us this week to break down exactly what that looks like. 💚 Listen 🎙️ ow.ly/8sjV50ZB3Ex

I just learned @bchandlerphd is on this site. Holy Instant Follow. I highly recommend you do the same; he is one of the most refreshing voices in the literacy research realm. Then listen to this podcast and follow @literacypodcast, if you haven’t.
Spelling is hard. Really hard. And there's a reason for that. In our latest episode, Dr. Brennan Chandler explains why spelling requires so much precision and what that means for instruction. 🎧 Listen to The Science of Spelling with Brennan Chandler ow.ly/IAwb50ZzMfP

What do the top-performing school districts in America have in common? A new look at high-performing schools found 8 things they share — and Steubenville, Ohio made the list. Of course it did. In Steubenville, nearly all third graders read proficiently. Part of the secret? Teachers require students to answer in complete sentences — a simple habit that builds language and reasoning skills every single day. Here's the bigger point: demographics don't dictate outcomes. Every state has schools quietly outperforming what their zip code "should" predict. The job of state and local leaders isn't to make excuses — it's to find these schools, study what they're doing, and scale it. Steubenville proves it's possible. The question is whether we're willing to learn from it. #ScienceOfReading #LiteracyMatters #Steubenville #EducationReform the74million.org/article/new…

🙏 Some people talk about supporting parents. Dr. @LouisaMoats actually does it. From day one, she has honored and supported parent genius — every single time. From appearing in our documentary to presenting at our recent conference, whenever we’ve called with an “opportunity,” she has said yes without a pause. Every. Single. Time. And behind the scenes, she worked tirelessly alongside parent genius @RobinZikmund to help secure Idaho literacy legislation — real change, made possible by real partnership. Louisa, we appreciate you more than words can say. 💛 #ScienceOfReading #ParentsForReadingJustice #BSLS2026

🎂📚 A birthday to remember (literally). Today, Hugh Catts took the stage to discuss “Thinking, Understanding, and Remembering” — a deep dive into the cognitive science behind how kids truly learn. And tomorrow? We get to celebrate the brilliant mind behind it all. 🎉 Happy Birthday, @CattsHugh! Thank you for decades of pushing our understanding of literacy forward. 🙌 #ScienceOfReading #HappyBirthday #LiteracyMatters #EducationSummit #BSLS2026

Make better decisions by using the right tools.
I often see schools use data from an assessment that was not designed for that purpose - which gives erroneous decisions. Our new article discusses this @UFLiteracy @nasponline @CECMembership @reading_league @NCTM @ASCD @mtssassociation @ResearchGate: researchgate.net/publication…

The Bush family has a real literacy legacy. 📚 Barbara Bush made literacy a lifelong focus. Laura and George Bush continued that work. Now Jeb Bush carries it forward through ExcelinEd. I attend the ExcelinEd conference every year, and it’s one I always get something out of — it’s where you learn what’s coming in education legislation before it hits states. If you care about the Science of Reading and want to stay ahead of the policy curve, it’s worth being in the room.
