What does a strong El Nino mean for winter in the Mid Atlantic? Look to the past. Strong El Ninos tend to weaken the Polar Vortex in the second half of winter. What does that mean? Cold air gets to spill into the United States. El Nino also tends to produce an active southern branch of the jet (more coastal storms). So while it might not be a cold winter here in MD, there could be times in mid to late winter when the cold air hooks up with one or two of the coastal storms. That's why I'm saying a mild winter does NOT mean there won't be any snowstorms. All Aboard! ❄️🚂 🙂 Stay tuned...

Woah now... Don't threaten me with a good time! 🤩 Both the latest GFS and European Ensembles are suggesting the Polar Vortex is going to be doing exactly what a winter lover would want to see from it in early November! Big stretch towards North America! Will that pattern lock in?? If we can get these stretches to continue, Winter is going to be very exciting in the Eastern US. #winteriscoming #PolarVortex #wxtwitter #wxX

One thing to watch for how the early winter pattern shapes up is what November does. The last 3 strong el ninos, the November 500mb height maps basically repeated itself in December every single year.

El Niño's massive standing wave of rising air is forecast to shift and expand eastward from late October into November. This will probably help fire up the subtropical jet stream, increasing storm frequency across the southern and eastern U.S. next month.

The Polar Vortex is preparing to do a big stretch towards North America just before Halloween. I'm sure Dr @judah47 will have much to say about this in his blog this week. #PV #PolarVortex #wxtwitter #wxX

Will need to keep a close eye on another potential strong coastal system which is expected to develop this weekend & slowly drift northwest through the upcoming week. Strong onshore flow will lead to additional beach erosion & coastal flooding. Rain amounts will depend on exact track of storm. Euro AIFS continues to bump NW on rainfall for late week. #EcWx

12z euro Ai says mid Atlantic mauler gets the rains from it up to Southern New England by Wednesday night…and it rains off and on through next weekend. A 4-5 day nor’easter. Outer banks north to Boston. Just one model. One model run. Not a forecast. Let’s see what kind of crazy solution euro shows us. He’s running now.

New CPC Start of Winter Outlook (Nov - Jan) 👇 I actually agree with them! 😁 Don't let the 'warm' temperature outlook fool you into thinking "No Snow'. El Nino induced active storm track along the East Coast should produce plenty of Nor'Easter type events. A few of those storms will likely hook up with cold air and produce snow in the I-95 corridor. Just because it's probably not going to be a cold winter in Maryland, doesn't mean it can't snow. Stay tuned...❄️🚂

After 80/90 degree RECORD warmth in the eastern half this week the bottom drops out over the weekend starting Friday for many. Strong cold front drops into place enough so that first FROSTS will be the calling card. HEAVY RAIN and some SEVERE weather will get us there. SNOW will be found in abundance over Colorado and Utah as its started already and rain/mountain snow will end northern New England's epic fall color show (now past peak) with lots of leaf drop.

MONTANA WINTER STORM! ❄️☃️ Over 13" of snow fell this weekend across the state, especially in Helena and Great Falls, who broke a daily snow record. The heavy, wet snow brought down numerous trees on to cars and powerlines in the region. Believe it or not, extra moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Rachel in the Pacific helped to boost snow totals! @stormhour

Wait for it! After a warm week ahead, a surge of chilly air appears poised to reach the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic next weekend. It could even bring the season's first lake-effect snow showers! ❄️

Will it be a snowy winter? Here's what the latest data shows! ☃️ A record El Niño will bring ample moisture to the U.S. this winter — outside of the Pacific Northwest — but that moisture won't always be met with cold air. That's especially true in December, when the Northeast and Great Lakes are confidently predicted to have less snow than average. On these maps, areas with a dashed outline mean that five out of six models agree on the outcome shown, which conveys confidence. These maps are best interpreted as a broad estimate of winter snowfall patterns, rather than a precise forecast for any one location. From December into January, a signal grows for more snow than normal across the West and Plains, stretching from California's Sierra Nevada to Denver and maybe even Dallas. There's also a bubble of above average snow that develops over the southern and central Appalachians, including Atlanta, Columbia, South Carolina as well as Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina. A similar snow signal continues into February. Although there's a relatively strong signal for less snow than normal across New England all winter, the rest of the Northeast is a more interesting case. There will likely be many big coastal storms which could bring rain to the coast but the potential for significant snow inland. These "high ceiling" storms appear to be a wildcard in the winter ahead. It will all depend on whether there's enough cold air in place to cash in on all that moisture as snow.

The Ghost of Isaias will move through the Mid Atlantic this weekend. Expect a chance for showers tonight, and periods of rain (1"-3") in the Baltimore Metro on Sunday. Windy, with temps in the 60s and coastal flooding at high tide along parts of the Bay. Sunday Night, there is a small chance for tornadoes. The leftover 'spin' from a tropical system can sometimes produce tornadoes. The best chance for that to happen, is in the yellow shaded area below. 👇 Stay tuned....

Morning guidance (HRRR shown) still showing a similar look to yesterday around the DC region... 1) Scattered light showers this evening, mostly in our southern zones. 2) Steadier rains start moving in later tonight. 7-11pm in our mountain zones to the west, DC in the 10pm-2am window. 3) Heaviest around DC in the 4am-10am window. Still looks like steadiest rains get out of here before Commanders kick off but I wouldn't say the game looks completely dry. 4) Lunchtime Sunday - Monday morning: Steadiest rains move northward but scattered showers will remain in an unsettled and humid environment. Localized heavy showers with a few embedded thunderstorms, with an isolated tornado threat. 5) SPC has DC region at a lower end (2-5%) risk with areas to our southeast a bit higher (5-10%) for the tornado risk. In the loop shown, it's the secondary line that fires after the main wave rain (in the 4pm-12am time window) that would have the tornado threat with it. 6) Clearing expected with more sunshine by Monday afternoon. 1-3" of rain expected with localized 3-5" amounts possible in heaviest bands. Gusts 30-40mph as possible as the system passes through.
