First, squeezing domestic demand does not improve the real terms of trade. It may reduce imports by making people poorer, but that’s not the same as improving the country’s external position in any meaningful developmental sense. It says: consume less, invest less, produce less, tolerate unemployment and underemployment, and hope the import bill falls. In other words: austerity as external management. Second, if the UK’s vulnerability is dependence on imported energy, food and manufactures, then cutting domestic investment in energy, infrastructure, industrial capacity and productivity is self-defeating. It may improve an accounting ratio temporarily, but it worsens the real constraint. You are advocating protecting sterling today by weakening the productive base tomorrow. Third, a downward fx adjustment is not automatically disastrous. It may raise import prices. But the policy question is then distributional and structural: who absorbs the price shock, what domestic capacity is built, what imports are essential, what can be substituted, and how fiscal policy protects lower income households. Treating any depreciation as catastrophic turns the exchange rate into a policy veto. Fourth, higher interest rates increase sterling income paid to holders of government liabilities, adding to fiscal transfers and reducing fiscal space, while supporting asset incomes and subsidising foreign sector exports to the UK. They are not simply a demand suppressing anti-inflation tool. The belief that sterling must be defended by high interest rates and lower public spending is a very orthodox external discipline story. Instead, policy should always be focused on seeking to improve the real terms of trade.
Replying to @MTBrone
The evidence is painfully clear - we have to import things we have to consume, like food and energy; the value of the pound therefore matters a great deal; this is a hard constraint on internal financing (ie we can’t just decide to issue more money/squash interest rates/etc)

Our soldiers don't fight wars for "our" country. Whether or not they know it they fight for the interests of the ruling class.

I've been telling everyone for over a year now, ever since Polanski got in to lead the Greens via spooky Progressive Internationals front-brand "Greens Organise", the same people who played us all with Corbyn, that it would happen all over again... Here we are today. 🧐

The man pictured on the left of this thumbnail is Mike Galsworthy, of the government sponsored anti-left "Social Media Intelligence Unit". Why is HE worth picturing as a paragon of virtue defending the Canary? This stinks. At some point, we'll also discuss Tony Tabatznik. 😉
There is something very wrong with this picture.

As ever, Russia is on the verge of implosion, losing in Ukraine, tanking economy but it will shortly win a war against a nuclear power and then invade and occupy Britain.
Lord Alan West yesterday: "Things like welfare.. are unimportant when you lose a war & you have Russian Chechen stormtroopers coming down the street raping women & killing people" Reintroducing the workhouse or Russians raping your mum. They're the only choices, ok.

He's honestly underappreciated, at least in some quarters. He's literally outdone Cristiano's best scoring season and we act like it's whatever.
🚨BREAKING: Harry Kane now needs just 10 more goals to equal Lionel Messi’s record for the most goals scored in a single season. 🤯🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

‘British patriots’? Genocidal Loyalist settler colonists. As every literate person knows, the occupied six counties of the north of Ireland have never been ‘British’. In fact they had to invent a new name for the state when they colonised Ireland, and then after they were pushed out by the Irish Republican movement. After 1921 it was the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’. As you can see the six counties were ‘united’ with, as opposed to being part of, ‘Great Britain’, a term only invented after 1707 when Scotland was added to the state. Sorry lads, you never were and never will be ‘British’.
✝️One of the THOUSANDS of giant fires built by British Patriot youth all over Ulster. This is team building that grows discipline , courage and community cohesion among young lads. That is WHY Ulster WILL Survive! Loyalists in the Craigyhill area of Larne Co.Antrim continue building their massive bonfire as the annual Twelfth of July celebrations draw near 🇬🇧

Bielsa speaking now to the press. He admits that Uruguay players asked for joint training sessions (from two groups to one) and shorter analysis sessions. He says both requests were accepted.

Michael Parenti (1933-2026): ‘The free market mythology argues that the most ruthless, selfish, opportunistic, greedy, calculating plunderers, applying the most heartless measures in cold blooded pursuit of corporate interests and wealth accumulation, will produce the best results for all of us through something called the invisible hand.’
Donald Trump: ‘COMMUNISM is the biggest threat to our nation since our founding, that includes World War 1, World War 2, September 11th, and the Pearl Harbor attack.’ In 40 years Chinese communism lifted 800 million out of poverty, in 40 years American capitalism produced 1 trillionaire. Trump and the oligarch class are frightened by communism because it represents the only ideology that threatens their position of power.

Consider this a warning, but if I have to pay VAT on the kids school fees, I may be forced to only buy a new merc every other year, clean my own bog and go down from 4 to 3 personal training sessions at David Lloyds per week. You want that on your heads working classes?

The mistake you’ve made here is assuming that revenue is the primary driver of sport rather than the sport itself. Aside from the fact that football is by far the most popular sport on the planet, the vast majority of the people who care deeply about it push back against the rampant commercialisation of the game, given that it prices working class people out of attending and cultivates an eco-system in which the rich get richer.

...and the bit that bond evangelists always seem to overlook is that those bonds are issued ex nihilo too. They exist because a lawful order instructed their creation. They, like the reserves they mop up, are a parliamentary promise to pay.

Gilts (bonds), like reserves, are created by the state. Like reserves they exist only in digital form and are sold on issue only to GEMMs banks who can only obtain them with reserves previously issued. Gilts cannot fund the spend if the spend is the only way to buy gilts.
