I’ve been warning about the spike in diesel prices, followed by shortages of supply, for several weeks now. Especially if Trump goes along with an export ban. A third of the diesel we import is from America, which is the world’s biggest diesel exporter (1.5m b/d). There are no alternative sources of supply. A US export ban would throw us into recession by Christmas. The economy, from farm machinery to road haulage, is powered by diesel.
The UK currently holds only 42 days of diesel in its emergency stockpiles. While the UK stands at just 42 days, countries like Italy hold 347 days, the USA has 677 days and Canada and Japan maintain over 1,000 days of supply. In the early 2000s, Britain held over 100 days of diesel reserves. However, as major domestic oil refineries closed down over the years, the country's massive storage tanks disappeared with them, leaving the UK heavily reliant on just-in-time imports. That is the jeopardy facing every supermarket shelf, every hospital delivery, every harvest, every bin collection and every freight train that still keeps Britain functioning. And the system that supplies that fuel security has been allowed to grow dangerously thin. Meanwhile the UK’s ability to make that fuel itself has been dismantled. From eighteen refineries in the 1970s to nine at the turn of the century, Britain is now down to just four: Domestic demand already exceeded refining capacity before those closures. The gap is filled by imports - more than half of the diesel that goes into British tanks. This has happened through a long succession of terrible government choices and neglect that treated energy security as an afterthought. Carbon costs were loaded onto plants that operate here, while higher-carbon fuel could be imported without equivalent burden. Almost every government over the past 20 years helped to create this looming crisis. Diesel is the engine room of the economy. And successive governments have allowed the tanks to run towards empty. Shameful.

Weasel words from the man elected by less than 12% of voters. The @BrumLabour loons and their leftist successors are determined to destroy motoring across the W Mids and to ban the SUVs JLR makes. @dgbailey @brumdispatch @andyburnham @afneil @andrewsentance
The news from JLR will be deeply worrying for thousands of workers and their families, many of them here in the West Midlands. My thoughts are with them first and foremost. JLR is hugely important to our region and employs some of the most skilled people in Britain. The company has faced an incredibly difficult period - from the cyber attack last year to the impact of the war in the Middle East and continuing instability around global tariffs and trade. I have been speaking with the Government and the Secretary of State over the weekend as to what we can do together to support workers and protect jobs in our region. The Combined Authority has quickly put together a £500,000 support package for JLR workers who choose to take voluntary redundancy. We will help people find new jobs, connect them with employers and provide skills and careers support where they need it. That half a million pound package is the starting point, not the limit of our support. If more help is needed, we are ready to do more. I have also made clear to JLR, the Government and trade unions that the Combined Authority stands ready to help in any way we can. These are highly skilled people and I want those skills to stay here in the West Midlands. We have employers across our automotive, advanced manufacturing, research and development and other growing industries who need those skills. Our job now is to bring those opportunities and these workers together. I will remain in close contact with JLR and the Government in the days ahead. My priority is making sure workers and their families have support and that we protect the skills and manufacturing strength that matter so much to the West Midlands.

I thought they had just announced a new model?
Jaguar Land Rover to axe 4,000 jobs as sales fall and tariffs bite (NB some of this doesn’t seem to stack up - I thought breakeven had already been cut to 300K?) thetimes.com/article/c6c1f0b…

Given the state of the local economy it is nice to see that this is a priority rather than jobs and enterprise.
Our St George's and Union flags are a unifying force celebrating our shared culture and heritage. Disappointing to see @BhamCityCouncil taking this action. They should be enabling communities that want them, to have formal displays in their neighbourhoods.
