I put a legume cover after wheat before corn in the rotation hoping to support microbial life in the soil helping with soil structure and possibly fixing some N for next years crop. Cereal rye before edible beans for soil structure and weed control

Soil pit from our cover crop field day. Biggest take away for me? All the root/worm channels pumping organic matter deep into the soil profile.

Here is a cover crop providing enough control of a terrible weed to change subsequent weed management. This is the result we want to design cover crop treatments to do.
Drastic reduction in #waterhemp seedling density at crop planting time (May 14, 2025) in @gchudzik1’s cereal rye #covercrop treatments at the Rock County Farm (Janesville, WI)!
No-till (no cover crop): 63 waterhemp seedlings per sq ft
No-till with high-biomass cereal rye cover crop (~36 inches tall rye): 0.25 waterhemp seedlings per sq ft
252-fold difference in #waterhemp seedling density on May 14, 2025.
High-biomass cereal rye cover crops can provide tremendous early-season weed suppression, especially in challenging springs for chemical weed control like this one. @WISoyCheckoff
