Greenwood, Tulsa—the famous "Black Wall Street"—before and after highway construction and “urban renewal." "Decades after the Tulsa Race Massacre [in 1921], urban ‘renewal’ [in the 1960s] sparked Black Wall Street’s second destruction," writes @SmithsonianMag.

The automobile industry is as ruthless as big oil, as lethal as the gun industry and as deceitful as big tobacco. They have co-opted transportation policy for a century and leave a wake of urban destruction, pollution, injuries and deaths. They have given no reason to trust them.

If bike lanes and pedestrians cause heavy traffic, then why are there traffic jams on highways where there are no bikes or pedestrians?

1/ The street doesn't look the same way to everyone - so earlier this week we took some journalists and politicians out to show them a new perspective 👇

This used to be car parking. Now it’s alive.

This morning I submitted the People over Parking Act, a bill in the U.S. House that eliminates parking minimums across the country in transit rich zones. We are in a housing crisis and eliminating parking requirements lowers costs to build. It’s good housing & climate policy.

How wonderful that we spent billions of dollars opening our waterfront to cars — before spending those billions of dollars, of course, our waterfront was openly only to cars.
1/2 We’re reaching an exciting milestone, the newly constructed Elliott Way, will be opening to the public by Monday, May 1! The completion of this work means that Alaskan Way & Elliott Way will now be open to traffic from S King St all the way up to Bell St!

This does not surprise me at all. I appreciate the honesty that human life is not the priority.
Engineer opposed to bollards along the sidewalks because automobiles might get damaged. The only surprise is that this honestly and widely held belief among professional engineers was spoken publicly. It's usually just subtext.

My next article is on how building cities for people instead of cars will make us all richer. Just one example: it turns out every random midsized intersection in every city wastes enough space for at least FORTY EIGHT pretty nice two bedroom apartments!

New entry for the “Things You Could Not Possibly Make Up” file: Berkeley’s most unhinged NIMBYs are fighting a bike lane and are rallying folks to go to a special city meeting on April 18. Their e-mail call to action? “It will be hard to park, so walk or ride your bike.”

Living in the DMV for almost a year has made me basically anti-car. On an almost daily basis I see drivers yelling at cyclists and pedestrians for just *existing.*
'They never stopped' | Tomasa Mejia took her 3 boys to their bus stop Friday morning. Just as the bus approached, a driver sped around the vehicle & nearly hit all of them. The incident happened along Addison Road, in Capitol Heights, Maryland. (@wusa9)

My students found me on Twitter so now in addition to learning about the changing Earth and climate system in class, they'll learn about transit and mobility issues. Hi everyone👋, cars ruin cities; also, study hard for your midterm exam.
