European green crab? More like European rainbow crab! 🦀
Here's -some- of the carapace colour & pattern variations for Carcinus in SA. While most are usually green/black, we do get these awesome morphs!
@SensoryEcology have done incredible research in Carcinus colour variation

Any @PlymUni students interested in protecting and studying the ocean should join @SeaChampsSW at Mount Batten tomorrow for a beach clean and @thembauk @CrabWatch survey! More here: mcsuk.org/beachwatch/beach/b…
Great to share a project update with the #EMSEA2019 crowd in the Azores in the past week. Looking forward to receiving those we 🦀🦀 #records that will hopefully follow @thembauk #crabwatch

This from @WAgreencrab contains some fascinating stuff. How invasive green crab in the Pacific NW have rapidly evolved to be more effective predators than native European greenies. @thembauk @CrabWatch @CornishRockPool wsg.washington.edu/crabteam/…

In honour of #BiodiversityDay here’s a selection of the wonderful variation in just some of the crabs in UK rock pools, from shore and furrowed crabs to edible and spider crabs. They vary greatly in colour, shape, and lifestyle

Spot the imposters! 3 #nonnativespecies 2 UK native shore crabs. Found on the Stour Estuary today during #mbiocamp2019. Colouration incredibly similar in both species when found together. @thembauk @FSCFlatfordMill @CrabWatch

Can report that there's still a well established population of brush clawed crabs (Hemigrapsus takanoi) at Harwich.
And yes, that did hurt!

It's officially #InvasiveSpeciesAwarenessWeek and as you might've guessed, we want everyone to be aware of the European #greencrab. This global invader is listed by the @IUCN_ISSG as one of the world's 100 worst #InvasiveSpecies. Stay tuned this week to learn more. #InvSpWk

" There's nothing more powerful than letting a kid go to the beach and hold a crab in his hand. Engaging with the marine environment can change lives" @mjattrill So true. Engaging with the marine environment as a child defined my life. 🐠🐟 🐬 🐳 🌊

Decorator crabs have microscopic hooks on their carapace, which allows them to attach things to themselves. In there case, it is often sessile organism like sponges, anemones, or seaweeds. This gives the crab incredible camouflage against the sea floor #fintasticfacts

These are highly invasive mitten crabs Eriocheir sinensis. We certainly do not recommend transporting crabs in shoe boxes, but if you do find one let us know!

#marineprotectedareas likely more resistant to impacts of #Invasivealienspecies such as the crab Percnon gibbesi due to enhanced predator numbers. An important factor to consider in #mpa management. Simone Noe of @udepalermo #EMBS53
