🌱 Reduced tillage in organic farming – what happens in the field? Trucketts Hall Farm recently hosted around 30 people for an ADOPT farm demo day to explore how low-disturbance cultivation and drilling could reduce reliance on herbicides and support soil health. Working with Treffler machinery specialists and three farm partners over a two-year project, the trials are comparing low-disturbance approaches with standard farm practice. So far, one key finding is encouraging: crops established using a shallow cultivator and direct drilling into the cultivated strip yielded as well as standard farm practice, although the weed community shifted. But yield is only part of the picture. The project is also looking at how cultivation affects weed populations, soil structure, nutrient availability, and soil life, including earthworm numbers and activity. With one more season to go, there’s more to learn.
