Skeleton Key for postwar US history imo. Take some time to read the descriptions; every detail is pretty revelatory.
Cumings on class fractions of US Empire (20th c): 1) Eastern capital capable of competing globally; favored state sovereignty, international orgs & economic integration 2) Weaker sunbelt capital; hoped to maintain itself thru more direct imperialism modeled after Indian Wars

Very interesting -- the ideal first-world left coalition will always be between the PMC and the racialized proletariat in the core. The class basis of abolition-democracy, the New Left, and perhaps a 21st century European left.
« Global politization of 2nd/3rd gen immigrants for LFI, There's a new kind of unity between young white middle/upper-class leftists and banlieues youth, very organized at protests according to my brother who's been inside for two weeks. » From a privated French mutual

Always funny when someone sends you an article notorious in your academic circle and you get jump-scared.

Pretty ridiculous. While I don't agree with everything Sadeghi-Boroujerdi has said, he's repeatedly called out imperialism and also done some of the best work theorizing what exactly the AoR is. Also, it is true that Iran's state & society do remain under severe pressure.
I will never forget how the Westoid Iranian compradors like the author of this piece--who constitute the majority of our "expert class"-- convinced themselves that the Islamic Republic was on the verge of collapse. Masterpiece. No notes.

The ecumenical Bombay-Gujarati mercantile cosmopolis is amazing; it's making me genuinely unable to figure out the religion of this Indian girl I'm co-leading a club w lol.

Nice materialist story of Islam's rise thru lens of Meccan merchant-capital. Pre-Islamic rise of Mecca as sacred sanctuary along w business innovations encouraged development of merchant capital. Conquests expanded reach of capital & its social base thru redistribution of wealth.

And to be clear, Chibber's theorizing is absolutely terrible to the point it can be refuted in like a couple sentences. He ignores the "basic Marxist insight" that ideology flows from economic conditions and does not even have a consistent theory of how culture relates to action.

This may be the funniest and most revealing image of all time wrt the Jacobin left. Sunkara mounting one of the shallowest defenses of Chibber (clarity makes him easy to attack), & a right-winger who defended the ICE murder of Renee Good chiming in to praise him as "a treasure."

Sunnis on the timeline who had nothing to say about Saudi Arabia bombing Sanaa and the continuous terror unleashed upon Yemen for years, now have a lot to say about how bombing Riyadh in retaliation is a 'war crime'.

I think I am smarter than at least some Iranian diplomats. They did put out a letter urging the American people to vote for Democrats when that party is also warmongering like crazy and there really isn't a solid anti-war option. Like I think I'm smarter than the guy behind that.
I think iranian and chinese diplomats have a much better idea of what they're doing than morons on twitter I don't know if this comes as a shock to you. Do you want to get mad at putin for selling diesel to the US now?

Well, this is just a difference of perspective. I don't see Russia, China, and Iran as a priori executing some unified anti-imperialist strategy. All of them are fundamentally seeking to renegotiate their position within and integrate into the US-led order.

For Iran, US deference to Israel in the region is a major obstacle to that, and this is forcing it to really drastically challenge US and Zionist hegemony in the reason (pursuing normalization by force). This gives it a much more revolutionary role than the others.

"managing the oil crisis for dozens of nations that depended on them" -- The most hilarious way of making extreme deference to the US-led order seem anti-imperialist. This overall benefits US hegemony lol.
Chinese socialism is currently preoccupied with arming multiple nations at war w white supremacist imperialists, dedollarization, and managing the oil crisis for dozens of nations that depended on them straight up eating the cost to keep their refineries running

And it is in China's interests -- it's not just some kind of favor. Both because China wants to keep other nations buying its stuff & because it's reliant on US-led economic globalization (the two are very intertwined bc US consumers buy the most Chinese goods. /2

Like if you understood even a fraction of Marxist state theory you would understand that countries are willing to sacrifice one private interest to to preserve the broader interests of their capitalist class /3
