Our first edition of ConserveConnect Weekly is now live. Issue No. 001 — Development, power and place conserveconnect.com/weekly-i… This week we look at the forces shaping the future of historic buildings and places: planning power, major redevelopment, rural heritage, data centres, conservation campaigns, skills, jobs and new opportunities across the sector. We also return to campaigns we have been following — including Liverpool Street Station, Brick Lane and the Truman Brewery, the Aylesham Centre in Peckham and the Railway Bell — to ask what has happened since the headlines moved on. ConserveConnect Weekly is about more than buildings. It is about ownership, finance, land value, public investment, planning decisions, skilled labour and stewardship — and who ultimately benefits from change. Read Issue No. 001: conserveconnect.com/weekly-i… If something important is happening in your area, tell us. We want to hear from conservation societies, trusts, campaigners, practitioners, craftspeople, researchers and building owners across the UK. #BuildingConservation #Heritage #HistoricBuildings #Planning #Conservation #HeritageAtRisk #TraditionalSkills #ConserveConnect @OurArnoldCircus @SAVEtoReuse @OldStationSt @PeckhamHeritage @PeckhamVision @UKLabour @justspace7 @ACAPeckham @thevicsoc @thegentleauthor @hbap1924 @LHBTrust @HistoricEngland @C20Society @UNESCOUK @PlanningMag @IHBCLondon

Liverpool Street Station has been approved for redevelopment. But one fundamental question remains unanswered: Why does improving a public railway station require almost a million square feet of office development above it? Our latest campaign update follows the money. Drawing on Brett Christophers’ work on rentier capitalism, public land and financialisation, we examine the financial package behind Network Rail’s scheme: station retail income, development value, future rents, developer returns and the crucial absence of a transparent station-first alternative. Liverpool Street already creates enormous economic value because generations of public investment built the railway and the connectivity around it. Before that value is converted into another major property asset, the public deserves to know what the station actually needs, what those works cost, what the station itself can finance—and what genuine funding gap remains. Show us the station without the property deal. 🔗 conserveconnect.news/liverpo… #LiverpoolStreet #SaveLiverpoolStreet #RailwayHeritage #NetworkRail #PublicInfrastructure #Financialisation #RentierCapitalism #Heritage #London #ConserveConnect @OurArnoldCircus @OldStationSt @SAVEtoReuse @PeckhamVision @UKLabour @justspace7 @ACAPeckham @thevicsoc @thegentleauthor

AYLESHAM & BRICK LANE: A WARNING FROM ACROSS LONDON At Aylesham in Peckham, community opposition helped defeat Berkeley Homes’ 867-home redevelopment proposal. Now the developer has gone to the High Court, seeking to overturn that refusal. At Brick Lane, Tower Hamlets rejected the latest Truman Brewery proposals—only for the developer to appeal and ultimately secure approval through central government. Different sites. Different legal routes. But the same fundamental questions: - Who can afford the housing being built? - Which existing businesses can afford to return? - Who captures the increase in land value? - Who bears the cost of displacement? - And who ultimately gets to decide the future of our neighbourhoods? Major developers have the resources to pursue applications through appeals, inquiries and litigation. Communities must organise again and again simply to retain a voice in what happens to the places where they live and work. Regeneration should improve places for existing communities—not treat their displacement as an acceptable consequence of rising land values. ** Read our new campaign analysis: conserveconnect.news/aylesha… #AyleshamCentre #Peckham #BrickLane #SaveBrickLane #RegenerationWithoutRemoval #RightToRemain #AffordableHousing #Planning #Heritage #Community #London #ConserveConnect @OurArnoldCircus @SAVEtoReuse @OldStationSt @PeckhamVision @UKLabour @justspace7 @ACAPeckham @thevicsoc @thegentleauthor

SAVE BRICK LANE - THE CAMPAIGN CONTINUES On 29 July 2026, the Government allowed all four planning appeals covering major redevelopment on and around the former Truman Brewery — including the controversial Grey Eagle Street data centre. The decision comes despite Tower Hamlets Council having unanimously resolved that the proposals should be refused. At stake is far more than a group of historic buildings. The approved development raises fundamental questions about: • Housing — just 44 homes, including only 11 affordable and 6 social homes • Heritage — what happens when buildings survive but communities are displaced? • Land and energy — should scarce inner-London land and electricity capacity be committed to a large data centre during an acute housing shortage? • Local democracy — how much influence should communities have over major developments in their own neighbourhoods? • Public benefit — who ultimately gains from rising land values, rents and redevelopment? Brick Lane's heritage was created by generations of migrants, workers, craftspeople, traders and independent businesses. Protecting it means more than preserving façades. Historic places should remain living places. We have substantially updated our Save Brick Lane campaign page with the background, timeline, Government decision, alternative vision for the Truman Brewery and the questions that now need to be answered. conserveconnect.com/campaign… Brick Lane is not simply a development opportunity. It is a living historic neighbourhood. Its future matters. #SaveBrickLane #BrickLane #TrumanBrewery #Heritage #BuildingConservation #AffordableHousing #SocialHousing #London #EastEnd #Community #ConserveConnect @OurArnoldCircus @SAVEtoReuse @OldStationSt @PeckhamVision @UKLabour @justspace7 @ACAPeckham @thevicsoc @thegentleauthor @guardian

The Truman Brewery ruling is now public. But a ruling is not the end of democracy, it is rather the beginning. Brick Lane’s communities participated, gave evidence, waited for the Inspector’s reasoning and waited for the Secretary of State’s decision. Now the ruling has arrived, the public has the right to ask: was the decision lawfully made? Was equality properly considered? Was participation meaningful? Was heritage harm pushed aside? Was the data-centre benefit properly tested? Was Brick Lane’s existing economy treated as real — or merely as a backdrop for redevelopment? This is our open basis for review. conserveconnect.news/truman-… @OurArnoldCircus @SAVEtoReuse @OldStationSt @PeckhamVision @UKLabour @justspace7 @ACAPeckham @thevicsoc @thegentleauthor #SaveBrickLane #BrickLane #TrumanBrewery #Banglatown #Heritage #Planning #CommunityPower

The Truman Brewery decision is a defeat - but it is also a document of power. The Secretary of State’s Truman Brewery ruling shows how community history, housing need, equality concerns and heritage harm can all be acknowledged — and still outweighed — when set against land value, economic growth, Tech City and data infrastructure. This decision must now be scrutinised urgently. Were equality duties properly discharged? Was the emerging residential-led plan lawfully weighed? Were the claimed economic benefits of the data centre properly tested? Was heritage harm truly given the protection the law requires? This is not over. The route to statutory review is narrow, but the questions are serious. conserveconnect.news/truman-… @OurArnoldCircus @SAVEtoReuse @OldStationSt @PeckhamVision @PeckhamHeritage @UKLabour @justspace7 @ACAPeckham @thevicsoc @thegentleauthor #SaveBrickLane #BrickLane #TrumanBrewery #Planning #Heritage #DataCentres #CommunityPower

What if one of the most effective climate actions is not to build something new, but to care for what already exists? Historic and period buildings contain generations of invested materials, energy and skilled labour. Repairing windows, roofs, masonry and plaster—and adapting whole buildings for continued use—can reduce demolition, material extraction and demand for fossil-fuel-based products. Our latest article examines why restore before replace should be central to climate-conscious building conservation, with practical examples from specialists listed on ConserveConnect. Period properties are often treated as environmental problems waiting to be corrected. But the building already standing is itself a valuable resource, containing materials, craftsmanship and embodied carbon that should not be discarded lightly. In the first article of our new series, Retrofitting Period Properties, we explore why sustainable retrofit should begin with understanding, maintenance and repair. Our latest article considers the unresolved Truman Brewery appeal in Brick Lane alongside the recent refusal of the Aylesham Centre redevelopment in Peckham. The two cases are different, but together they expose a central question in London planning: how are public need, land value, viability, heritage, infrastructure and existing communities weighed when historic urban places become development assets? The article argues that the data-centre element of the Truman Brewery proposal must be examined not simply as a technical use, but as part of a wider process through which land can be reclassified, valued and converted into rent-bearing infrastructure. Peckham has received a decision. Brick Lane is still waiting. conserveconnect.news/brick-l… #Planning #UrbanRegeneration #Heritage #BrickLane #Peckham #TrumanBrewery #AyleshamCentre #London #PoliticalEconomy #Housing #Infrastructure

Traditional plastering is not nostalgia. It is a practical response to the way historic buildings actually work: walls that need to release moisture, ceilings that rely on hidden laths and fibres, façades that depend on compatible materials, and decorative interiors that can be damaged by careless modern repair. Our latest article explores why lime plaster, lath-and-plaster, stucco, fibrous plaster, pargeting and scagliola are part of a wider revival of traditional building knowledge — and why old buildings need skilled hands again. conserveconnect.news/the-wis… #TraditionalPlastering #LimePlaster #HistoricBuildings #BuildingConservation #HeritageSkills
