Arsène Wenger:
🗣️ “There was a time we had £90 million turnover and we had to pay back £22 million per year for the stadium. I couldn’t sleep because we had to qualify for the Champions League to pay back the money.”
🗣️ “We had to sell our best players. Other clubs came in with lots of money but we were on the same level from 2007 to 2016.”
This is why so many Arsenal fans will forever defend Wenger.
While rivals were spending freely, Arsenal were carrying the weight of the Emirates project. Every summer meant losing key players and finding ways to remain competitive enough to secure Champions League football.
🔴 Sold stars
🔴 Balanced the books
🔴 Built a world-class stadium
🔴 Kept Arsenal among Europe’s elite
Wenger didn't just manage Arsenal through that era. He carried the club through one of the most difficult financial periods in its history.
The trophies are part of his legacy. But so is the fact that Arsenal emerged from that period stronger, financially stable and ready to compete again.
Arsène Wenger was talking about “financial doping” years ago.
He was mocked, dismissed and accused of being bitter because Arsenal weren’t winning anymore.
Now Manchester City have been found guilty of the vast majority of the Premier League’s financial charges.
I hope the apologies are as loud as the disrespect was back then.
Without Wenger's sacrifices, there is no Arsenal of today.

A single Russian missile hitting Berlin, London or Washington would trigger a response so overwhelming that humanity would be lucky to emerge from it at all. And yet munitions manufactured and guided by NATO powers are now routinely hitting Moscow. With no democratic legitimacy — they hold favourability ratings of 15-40% in countries that have no real say on questions of war and peace — Europe’s ruling elites openly state their aim of dismembering Russia. To give their intentions teeth, they have embarked on an armament drive that now exceeds the annualised increases in military spending in the years immediately preceding the First World War. Even the tensest moments of the Cold War, which we now know put us seconds away from annihilation, provide no precedent for the scale of the folly unfolding today. Since there is no meaningful anti-war movement in Europe, we have reached the incredible point where our main barrier to nuclear annihilation is the thinning patience of the leadership in the Kremlin. I don’t think we have ever faced a situation so brittle and been so deeply unprepared to confront it.

Søren Kierkegaard on the Importance of Walking
“Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Everyday, I walk myself into a state of well-being & walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. But by sitting still, & the more one sits still, the closer one comes to feeling ill. Thus if one just keeps on walking, everything will be all right.”

BREAKING: The wealthiest 1% of US earners now own 50.1% of US equity and mutual fund holdings.
To put this into perspective, their ownership stood at 40.1% in 1990 and 39.6% in 2001.
At the same time, the next 9% wealthiest households own 37.3%, and the middle 40% own just 11.7%.
By comparison, the bottom 50.0% of earners hold just 1.1%.
As a result, the top 10% of earners now own ~87.4% of all equity and mutual fund assets.
Asset owners are the only winners in this economy.

The AI boom is creating a generational divide in software jobs:
US software developer employment for those aged 22-25 has declined -23% since November 2022, when ChatGPT was launched.
At the same time, the 26-30 age group has seen a decrease of -5%.
By comparison, employment among software developers aged 41-49 has risen +18% over the same period.
This creates a 41 percentage point gap between the youngest and one of the most experienced groups within the same profession.
Meanwhile, early-career workers in the most AI-exposed jobs have experienced a -16% decline in employment relative to less-exposed occupations and more experienced peers since November 2022, even after adjusting for firm-specific shocks.
By contrast, employment among workers in less AI-exposed fields, as well as more experienced workers within the same occupations, has remained steady or continued to grow.
The AI revolution is wiping out entry-level tech jobs.

On this day in 356 BC, Alexander the Great was born in Pella, the capital of Macedon. He would be dead before his 33rd birthday, but in that short window he conquered the largest empire the ancient world had ever seen, from Greece all the way to India, and by most accounts he never lost a single battle in his life.
According to Plutarch, the very night Alexander was born, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus burned to the ground. This was not some small shrine. It was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, a marble temple so massive and so beautiful that people crossed the sea just to stand inside it.
The man who burned it was named Herostratus, and he did it for one reason only. He wanted to be remembered forever. He had no grudge and no cause. He just wanted his name to outlive him. The people of Ephesus were so disgusted that they made it a crime to ever speak his name again, and it clearly did not work, because more than two thousand years later we are still saying it.
The ancient writers could not resist the timing of it all. They said the goddess Artemis, who was supposed to protect women in childbirth, let her own temple burn to ash because she was too busy that night. She was hundreds of miles away up in Macedon, personally watching over the delivery of the baby who would grow up to conquer the known world.
Plutarch adds another detail that is almost too clean to be real. He says Alexander's father, King Philip, received three messages on that single day. His general had just crushed an enemy in battle, his racehorse had just taken first place at the Olympic Games, and his wife had just given him a son. Three victories delivered to one man in one afternoon.
Meanwhile, back in Ephesus, the priests and seers were not celebrating anything. They were running through the streets in a panic, tearing at their faces, screaming that the fire was a warning from the gods and that a great destroyer had been born that night who would bring ruin to all of Asia.
They thought they were mourning a building. They had no way of knowing that the real disaster was not the pile of burning marble in front of them. It was a newborn child in a palace far to the north, a boy who in thirty years would march an army straight through their world and change the map of it forever.

Thatcher - for all her many, many faults - was absolutely right to send a task force to reclaim the Falklands. And Michael Foot, then leader of the opposition, was right to give her his total backing. Argentina has no legitimate claim on the islands. They are British by right and by the democratic will of Falklanders.

A study shows psilocybin works by scrambling your sense of self.
A groundbreaking study from Washington University followed healthy volunteers who received a single high dose of psilocybin while researchers monitored their brain activity before, during, and for weeks afterward. The results were striking.
Rather than simply changing perception, psilocybin profoundly desynchronized the default mode network (DMN)—a key brain system responsible for self-reflection, memory, and our sense of identity.
During the peak experience, this network essentially fell apart. Remarkably, subtle alterations in its functioning continued for up to three weeks afterward. The stronger a participant’s psychedelic experience—marked by awe, ego dissolution, and feelings of connectedness—the longer these brain changes persisted.
Scores from a standardized questionnaire assessing the depth of the mystical-type experience aligned closely with the degree of DMN disruption observed in brain scans, confirming that psilocybin’s transformative effects are rooted in measurable neurological shifts.
This temporary “unplugging” of the default mode network may explain why psilocybin shows therapeutic potential for conditions like depression and PTSD, where the DMN is often rigidly overactive. By breaking entrenched patterns—even briefly—the brain appears to gain an opportunity to rewire itself in healthier ways.
Researchers emphasize, however, that these findings come from controlled clinical settings. Psilocybin remains unapproved by the FDA for general use and carries real risks when taken recreationally or without medical supervision.

Replying to @Keir_Starmer
Good riddance
What an absolute disaster you have been
The signs were there in Covid, when - far from questioning extreme measures - you were all-in on screaming for more, even demanding *another* lockdown and talking of using emergency legislation to “deal with” campaigns youdidn’t like
Since gaining power with less than 20% of the electorate voting for him, you could barely have been worse.
Just for starters:
- Digital ID - never in manifesto, 3m signed petition against - must now be SCRAPPED
- Facial recognition rolled out with almost zero public debate
- “Social media ban” - AKA ID checks for all - and seemingly some kind of VPN restrictions too, more akin to China or Russia
- Even in the last few days, pushing forward a plan to force-feed us content from state broadcaster the BBC
- Protest restrictions expanded further - peaceful demonstrations can now be curtailed simply for being “too disruptive”, undermining a fundamental democratic freedom
- Betraying small family farmers on IHT after promising no changes pre-election; family businesses are far less talked about but they are affected too
- Full steam ahead on crazy Net Zero, with bills going through the roof - again despite his explicit election promise they’d “drop £300 under a Labour govt”
- Arbitrary banning of artists and speakers from the UK
- Fostering huge division by insulting huge swathes of the public who have reasonable concerns about immigration, with “far right” smears bandied around
Whoever comes in next, the only way we will get to a better and freer future is by working #together
Through the efforts of many we have managed to get partial climbdowns and improvements on some of these things - but its a horrible list
We need a Digital Bill of Rights as a bulwark against people like Starmer. But not just Starmer - against a whole technocratic class who see the public as a problem to be managed, and whose increasingly dystopian surveillance “solutions” are well advanced and backed by big money
Join us, support us, and let’s keep pushing back #together - because the challenges we face are far bigger than this one man, however dreadful and damaging he may have been
