Find the beauty and do not let the misery of this world efface it. #existential
Let’s remind ourselves, once again, that there is much beauty in this challenging world we live in. It’s Friday, so be happy and enjoy the day 🥰

(1/2) It’s been a whirlwind leading up to and following the launch of my memoir about my experiences with the mental health industry—appearing in many places from CNN, to the BBC, to the Dark Horse Podcast. I’m especially excited to be doing this event with @joannamoncrieff , whose nuanced, original ideas about the way we think and talk about psychiatric drugs were very helpful for me as I “depsychiatrized” myself back in the early 2010s. I hope you’ll join us! (Link to register in comments)

ICYMI: If you’re a member of our online mutual aid platform, Inner Compass Exchange, you’ll find our community is truly global, with members from across the planet. We’re pleased then that our founder, @LauraDelano, recently spoke with BBC World Service, which reaches hundreds of millions worldwide each week—because we know only too well the impact of the mental health industry extends far beyond us here in the US. On the program, Laura discussed her experiences of being a psychiatric patient caught in a system that was worsening the very problems it aimed to treat, recognizing that while this is not the case for everybody, she is not unique in such experiences. She was followed by @MarkHoro, the-co-author of the Maudsley Deprescribing Guide, with presenter Julian Worricker noting how little help is available for tapering of psychiatric drugs. We hope this program helps convey to those of you around the world who’ve had similar experiences to Laura, that you are far from alone. And if you’re here on X and not in the US (or the UK), let us know in the comments what the local picture is like for you, including unique challenges and positive developments.

Only in recent years I learnt my ‘mental illnesses’ were more than my broken brain. Education & awareness of causes, rights & more hopeful narratives of healing are sorely lacking. The individualised narrative can add to stigma & shame. Time for a new conversation #Give5!
Great to have all the main political parties endorsing #Give5! There’s a clear desire and energy for a new conversation, and approach to mental health. We now look forward to the @healthdpt and @mikenesbittni implementing this framework! Learn more 👉 nlb.ie/take-action/give-5

This was me 4 years ago. I was in ICU in hospital as I’d just nearly drunk myself to death. I’d been an alcoholic and suffered depression and anxiety for over 25 years. I’m completely sober now and wanted to share some learnings that may help someone (1/8) 🧵

I received the first hardcover copy of my book, and boy is it beautiful. Surreal to consider that we're only a month out from publication (March 18th)! To my longtime friends and supporters, pre-orders can have an enormous impact on the success and reach of a book, so one of the most helpful things you can do is get yours today from your preferred bookseller, and tell your friends and family to, as well. Pre-order link in bio and replies below. Thank you to all of you who've helped me get here 🥹

A short story about #grief, healing & blending families... My late-wife was Belgian. She would always speak to the children in Dutch. After she died 5 years ago, my son stopped speaking her language. I guess it was too painful. 1/5

A recent study suggests that #walking in nature appears to help certain executive control processes in the brain. E.g. decision making and problem-solving buff.ly/3SD952j Why not go for a walk in your local park on your lunch break? (weather permitting!) #psychology

A beautiful, poignant thread about losing our children before us 🪽
I was rummaging in some old stuff today and found a half finished soft toy that Leo had started making at middle school. He brought the 'shell' of it home when he was about 11 and we meant to finish it, never did. Forgot it, put it away /1

My oldest brother unexpectedly passed away Nov 5. I’m posting b/c I want as many places as possible to have record of his existence. Wherever he went, he brought laughter & positive energy & I want people to know that. His name is Tom and he was the coolest guy I’ve ever known.

When I applied to university, I was told the odds were against me—only 14% of care leavers make it to university. Now I'm in my 2nd year at Oxford, despite the odds. If you're a care experienced student applying to university, you CAN do this ♥️ #NationalCareLeaversWeek
