India's Ayush sector logged 4,077 patent applications in twelve years. The Ayush ministry calls it a sign of innovation. The report behind it is far less excited. That report, published by India's patent office, counts 711 grants. Ayush Secretary Rajesh Kotecha said it "demonstrates the growing research and innovation base" of the sector. A lawyer on X asked the question the celebration skips: "how many patented products actually made it to market?" The report gives no number. It warns that "patent activity should not be treated as a direct measure of research or innovation performance." So what does a patent prove? Only that it met the legal test. That's not regulatory approval, or evidence that the medicine works. A patent gains commercial value, the report says, once it becomes "a marketable licensed product." It gives no count of how many did. Its own recommendations ask to "shift the emphasis from patent generation alone." Startups and small firms filed just 6.6% of applications.
