Breast cancer does not have a single cause. It develops through a complex interaction of factors, including age, family history, inherited genetic changes, hormonal influences and certain lifestyle factors.
However, many women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors, making awareness and timely medical attention important for everyone.
The scale is large. In 2022, an estimated 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide, and approximately 670,000 people died from the disease.
In Uganda, an estimated 35,968 new cancer cases of all types were recorded in 2022, including 2,999 cases of breast cancer among women.
Know what is normal for your breasts, seek medical attention promptly if you notice unusual changes. Early detection saves lives. Share this message with a woman you care about.

JustInโฐ: ๐ฑ EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE, BUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES: LOSCO AND PARTNERS ADVANCING YOUTH EMPOWERMENT IN KIGEZI
Today, the Local Sustainable Communities Organisation (LOSCO) @CommunitiesOrg joined the Ndorwa Secondary School community in Kabale Municipality for the launch of the Thrive Impact Club, an initiative designed to empower young people in school and out of school while addressing challenges such as school dropouts and teenage pregnancies.
The initiative was launched by Hon. Enid Origumisiriza, Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, and is being championed by Kabale District Youth Councillors Edgar and Natasha, in collaboration with partners committed to advancing youth development and wellbeing.
The launch featured career guidance and mentorship, with emphasis on self-discovery, talent development, life skills, and informed decision-making. Participants also planted fruit trees, reinforcing the importance of environmental conservation and youth participation in sustainable community development.
As part of the broader empowerment efforts, Hon. Enid Origumisiriza continues to support menstrual health and hygiene through the provision of reusable sanitary towels to schoolgirls, in partnership with Pad a Girl Child Foundation Uganda, helping promote dignity and support girls' continued participation in education.
Speaking during the mentorship session, Mr. Taremwa Albert, @Consultalbert - Executive Director of LOSCO, encouraged students to make responsible choices and develop resilience in the face of peer pressure and life challenges.
โLife presents us with choices every day, and the decisions we make today shape our future. Making good choices requires self-awareness, discipline, and the courage to stand by your values, even when faced with peer pressure. Learn to think critically, consider the consequences of your actions, and seek guidance from trusted mentors.โ He Said
He emphasised the importance of the 3CsโChoices, Consequences, and Courageโand encouraged students to believe in their potential, respect themselves and others, and remain focused on their aspirations.
๐ค A Commitment to Long-Term Partnership and Youth Empowerment
LOSCO recognises that sustainable youth empowerment requires long-term collaboration among schools, community leaders, elected representatives, youth structures, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.
We look forward to building and strengthening meaningful partnerships with Hon. Enid Origumisiriza, youth leaders, schools, and like-minded organisations to expand opportunities for young people both in and out of school. Through sustained collaboration, we aim to advance life skills, education retention, SRHR awareness, environmental stewardship, leadership, and community resilience.
Together, we can nurture informed, confident, responsible, and empowered young people who contribute positively to their communities and shape a more inclusive and sustainable future.

#AccessToMedicines requires policies that enable local production, intellectual property rules that protect public health, sustainable financing, effective regulation and procurement systems that translate resources into affordable medicines.
The National Policy Dialogue has closed with a clear call to turn these discussions and recommendations into practical reforms that strengthen Ugandaโs capacity to secure the medicines people need.

A Multi-Stakeholder Panel Discussion moderated by Ms @KyomukamaFlavia, ED, @NAFOPHANU || Taking Stock of Progress and Interrogating Barriers to #AccessToMedicines
Dr. Martha Grace Ajulong, Commissioner Pharmaceuticals and Supply Chain, @MinofHealthUG called for policy and legal reforms that support local pharmaceutical production, including technology and skills transfer, greater use of TRIPS flexibilities and a review of the Industrial Property Act. She also noted the need to strengthen implementation of the Health Supply Chain Framework and address financing gaps following reductions in external support.
Amos Ntumanya, Senior Inspector, @UNDAuthority explained that access to medicines goes beyond availability. It also depends on affordability, geographical accessibility, acceptability, safety, efficacy and quality. He pointed to lengthy registration processes and regulatory capacity as some of the barriers that need attention.
James Lubwama, @URSBH highlighted the importance of transparency within the patent system, noting that patent information is published and that stakeholders can access information held by the Bureau within the law. He emphasised that the disclosure function of patents provides an opportunity for government and other stakeholders to understand what has been patented and use that information to inform access-to-medicines interventions.
Dr. Adrian K. Ddungu @Labg_DZ, Uganda Pharmaceuticals and Manufacturers Association highlighted the challenges facing local pharmaceutical manufacturers, particularly financing, market access, affordability and the cost of technology transfer. He called for procurement approaches that provide local manufacturers with predictable market opportunities, creating greater incentive for investment and technology transfer.
Moses @jtalibita, Academia emphasised the role of academia in generating evidence to inform policy and supporting a regulatory impact assessment of proposed reforms to the Industrial Property Act. He also called for stronger links between researchers and practitioners, comparative research, knowledge translation and greater participation of academics in public policy consultations.

The dialogue is examining health sovereignty, local production and access to medicines, considering findings and recommendations from a scoping study, while bringing together government, regulators, manufacturers, civil society and other stakeholders to interrogate the legal, economic, regulatory and structural barriers affecting access to medicines.
The discussions will culminate in identifying priority actions and developing a national reform roadmap to guide efforts towards sustainable access to medicines.
