In 1946, World War II veterans in a small Tennessee town armed themselves, laid siege to the county jail, and forced a corrupt local government out of power. It is one of the only times in modern American history that citizens took up arms against their own officials and won.
Paul Cantrell's machine, tied to Memphis boss Ed Crump, had run McMinn County since 1936 on a fee system that paid deputies per arrest. Returning GIs got picked up and fined repeatedly. In May 1946 they formed the GI Non-Partisan League and ran their own slate.
On election day, Sheriff Pat Mansfield brought in some 200 out-of-county deputies at $50 a day. One shot a Black farmer, Tom Gillespie, in the back for trying to vote. When the polls closed, deputies carried the ballot boxes into the jail and barricaded themselves in.
The veterans broke into the National Guard armory, surrounded the jail, and fought a six-hour gun battle before using dynamite. The deputies surrendered around 3:30 a.m. Nobody died. The ballots were counted in public.

Former Venezuelan dictator Maduro is in jail here. But his secret-police thugs are still there, threatening and arresting people brave enough to call for freedom.
And now the freedom fighter with the most cred, Maria Corina Machado, is trying to return from exile. She wants free and fair elections, which would be a solid complement to the country’s new-found cooperation with the U.S. on oil production.
The undergirding of the current regime is built on straw and thugs, not a great foundation for building a long-term alliance with such an important oil producer.
Pres Trump’s lightning strike to remove Maduro and start all the positive moves toward reviving Venezuela’s oil industry was a bold, historic action. But turning those actions into a lasting legacy for our 2 nations depends on setting the stage for free and fair elections. Meeting with Maria Corina Machado this week, as well as Venezuela’s UNelected leader, could set the stage for such a legacy.
Just as Simón Bolívar liberated Venezuela nearly 200 years ago, President Trump has liberated Venezuela from dictatorship. President Trump’s historic oil deal securing American majority control of 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan reserves is a win for American energy dominance and prosperity for the people of Venezuela. Free and fair elections remain essential to complete the democratic transition, and under President Trump’s strong leadership we’ll get there. I’m proposing July 24, 2027, let’s go!

South Side families are being squeezed from every direction.
Property taxes keep rising. Housing is becoming harder to hold onto. Seniors are worried about being priced out of homes they worked their whole lives to keep. And too often, the same families being asked to pay more are not seeing better results from the systems their money is funding.
CPS has an enormous budget, but families still want answers.
🚨Are children reading better?
🚨Are classrooms safer?
🚨Are dollars reaching students?
🚨Are taxpayers seeing results?
As a federal candidate, I cannot pretend Congress sets Chicago property tax bills. But I can fight to make sure federal education dollars come with stronger oversight, clearer outcomes, and real accountability.
