AI = Alien Intelligence
Excerpt from my conversation with @tomedwards for the Complete Tech Heads podcast. Full episode available here: youtube.com/watch?v=WhmrBmcv…
"We're creating alien intelligence"
The moral, ethical, and legal destiny of robots and AI is in our hands and we should be thinking about these issues TODAY.
That is the position of this week's guest, @David_Gunkel, who joined me to discuss his new book Person, Thing, Robot. In this wide-ranging conversation, we cover:
- Defining people and things
- Anthropomorphisaton
- AI friends and girlfriends
- Marc Andreesen & techno-optimism
- Human treatment of animals
- Cloud-based AI, LLMs, and AIs falling in love with each other
- Chinese, European, and American approaches to regulating AI
- AI risk and doomerism
- Open source AI, regulatory capture, and ethics-washing
- Artificial Superintelligence
- The responsibilities of AIs
- Instrumental goals & recommendation algorithms
- Unwittingly heralding the downfall of civilization
- Sam Altman and the technology's long exponential curve
I honestly found this one of the most interesting and thought-provoking conversations I've ever had on the show.
Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did! Links to the full conversation below...

#AI should not be called #AI
My second essay on #cybernetics as an alternative name for what has been called AI. This one published by @IAI_TV and featuring citations of Jaron Lanier (@nytimes), Ted Chaing (@FT), @quinta and @emilymbender

While #BigTech long-termists and #AIEthics debate open letters, this new #OpenAccess book from @spillteori takes a more holistic both/and perspective of #AI and its impact on the current state and future possibilities of our fragile planet.

Once again...the world catching up to my research.
Not that it gives me any pleasure to say so.

This is insane. Basically Germany has now said that postdoc contracts cannot last longer than three years, and after that, they have to be offered permanent positions (of which no one proposed how to generate). Even my own position now would seemingly be illegal. 🤦🏻♀️🙈

#Humanities
The fact that many #ML/#AI researchers have "drunk the cool-aid" and cannot see the limitations of their own #technology is not a moral failing. It is a problem with our educational system. This is what happens when an obsession for #STEM/#tech devalues the Humanities
