Speak to any hard-bitten older farmer around me in Somerset, or anywhere in Britain, and they will tell you that they grew up among fields teeming with corncrakes, grass snakes, hares, hedges full of yellowhammers and other songbirds, car windscreens splattered with bugs after the shortest summer drive, nearly all now gone. 98% of wildflowers, gone. Huge shoals of herring, cod, and other fish in the sea, a distant memory. Across almost every indicator, the losses during just one human lifetime have been catastrophic. The data is all there, as are the anecdotes. Britain is among the most nature-depleted countries on earth.

We are not the most nature depleted country. That's just a myth. We are one of the most human altered countries, i.e. one with the least amount of truly wild places. Our biodiversity is actually quite high for a small country, partly as a result of human intervention.

If you feed your visiting hedgehogs, they will leave a healthy scent trail that sick hogs will follow.
So sooner or later you will have a casualty arrive who needs taking to a rescue.
It can be a worrying time, but being prepared will make things a lot easier and calmer.
Getting this kit together will take away the worry, and will last you for years of essential service.

Please ✍️ this petition if you don’t want to see all our green belts go to development because of the deliberately vague grey belt definition..once our green fields are gone, they are gone forever ..let’s get to 10K

And yet Hertfordshire untouched green belt is constantly cited as the deliberately flawed definition of grey belt …all devised to allow developers to increase profits…residents are making it clear they do not want their green spaces disappearing to housing when there are brownfield sites and empty properties @mhclg

The loss of ancient woodland this century is 'horrifying' says the Woodland Trust. Yet our shameless governments continue to allow it to happen.🔽 Despite the wishes of local communities & the wider electorate.

This summer, Reform-led Kent County Council voted to include Oaken Wood in its minerals plan.
If approved, at least 41 hectares of this ancient woodland would be destroyed, making it the largest loss of ancient woodland in England this century.
At a time when our nature is already under pressure, we can’t afford to lose woodlands habitats like Oaken Wood.
That’s why I’ve signed @CHinchliffMP's letter calling on the Government to save Oaken Wood and strengthen protections for ancient woodland across England.

Good rescues are so rare, because it's such a hard thing to do.
Not just physically and emotionally, but because it takes a lot of time and a lot of money to provide this free service to the public.
So having the loving encouragement and willing support of kind people makes all the difference in the world.
Thank you so much to those who donate towards the cost of medications and bills, and who send essential supplies - I am so deeply moved and inspired by the goodness of your hearts.❤️🩹
And thank you to all of you who support me by your loving solidarity - whether it's commiserating in the losses or rejoicing in the successes - and to those who advocate passionately on behalf of vulnerable animals subjected to mistreatment.
It's the very best use of our energy and passion.
It's true humanity.♥️

The new agreement explicitly recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.

Weston Big Wood is irreplaceable ancient woodland & a protected SSSI . Yet plans could see around 500 homes built on Tower Farm and Black Rock , enclosing it on both sides . We should be protecting places like this , not building right up to their edges . c.org/8bV8Vy5Gm6

It is very common for people in the UK to kill ivy by cutting the stems because they don’t like how it looks or they think it is ‘strangling’ the trees.
It can take ten years for an ivy to reach maturity and flower. The birds and the bees will thank you if you let it grow.

Mind the gap! Creating a hole at the base of a fence helps create wildlife corridors, allowing creatures to move from one green space to another. Hedgehogs, for example, travel up to 2 miles each night in search of food – so they need room to roam 🦔

The last surviving warship of the 1982 Falklands task force ex-HMS Ambuscade could be expended as a target within weeks.
Sold to Pakistan in 1993, she served another 30 years as PNS Tariq. The Pakistan Navy has agreed to gift her for preservation but getting her home is the problem. War and instability across the Middle East have pushed insurance and transit costs sharply upwards, roughly doubling the bill for the 6,000nm passage to around £2M.
The Pakistan Navy has now set a deadline of the end of September. If she has not moved by then, she will be destroyed.
The plan is to make her the centrepiece of a Falklands War museum on the Clyde. The charity @FallsofClydeSco has written to the Pakistani Navy requesting an extension.

Ernest Smith, everyone called him Smokey, stood in a ditch in Italy in the pouring rain and knocked out a German Panther tank with a shoulder-fired anti-tank weapon from about thirty feet away, then drove off the tank's crew and a swarm of infantry to protect his wounded friend, and kept fighting until he had wrecked two tanks and two self-propelled guns almost single-handed. He was the only private soldier to win the Victoria Cross in the whole Second World War, and the last surviving Canadian VC, and he was a magnificent, incorrigible troublemaker.
Smith was a Canadian, and a genuine handful, a soldier who was promoted and busted back down to private so many times that it became a running joke, a man who spent as much time in trouble as out of it. Fittingly, he won the highest award for valor in the world while holding the lowest rank.
On the night of October 21st, 1944, in the Italian campaign, his unit was trying to establish a bridgehead across the Savio River in the north of Italy. The river had risen in torrential rain, which meant the Allied tanks and anti-tank guns could not get across to support the infantry. So when the Germans counterattacked with three Panther tanks and about thirty infantry, Smith and his fellow soldiers were out there on the far bank with nothing heavy to stop them.
Smith did not run. A comrade was wounded, and Smith was determined to protect him. As a Panther clanked toward him in the dark, Smith stood in the open with his PIAT, a clumsy, short-ranged, shoulder-fired anti-tank weapon, and held his fire until the tank was almost on top of him, about thirty feet away, and then knocked it out. When the German infantry riding the tank and following it leapt off and came at him, and a second Panther loomed up, Smith stood his ground in the middle of the road, firing his submachine gun, driving the enemy back, protecting the wounded man behind him. Through the fight he destroyed a tank and helped account for a second tank and two self-propelled guns, and routed the German infantry, holding the position by himself.
They gave Smokey Smith the Victoria Cross, and he remained exactly who he was: when he was sent home a hero and told he would meet dignitaries, he reportedly celebrated by getting into trouble one more time. He lived a long life, dying in 2005 as the last living Canadian holder of the Victoria Cross, the irrepressible private who stood in a ditch and killed a Panther at thirty feet.

Sikhs have a proud military history in partnership with Britain. During World War II, over 300,000 Sikh soldiers volunteered for the British Indian Army. Sikhs accounted for over 20% of the British Indian Army during the World Wars.
They wore turbans in combat instead of steel helmets and fought bravely across multiple global fronts.
We owe them a great deal of gratitude and it’s very pleasing to see this military heritage and partnership being showcased and celebrated at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Orangutans might just be some of the best parents in the animal kingdom. 🦧❤️
In the animal world, few species invest in raising their offspring with such endurance and completeness as orangutans. Many researchers and nature observers agree that orangutan mothers rank among the most outstanding parents, surpassed only by humans in the length and devotion of their care.
Orangutan infants stay with their mothers for 7 to 9 years, learning every skill needed to survive in the rainforest. The mother teaches them what to eat, where to find food, how to build sleeping nests, and how to move through the trees. Remarkably, she usually gives birth to another baby only every 7 to 9 years, allowing each offspring years of undivided love, protection, and attention. For orangutans, raising a child is not merely a few years of caregiving—it is a long process of teaching the young how to survive on their own.
Scientific figures further support this view. Infants nurse continuously for at least 6.5 to 8 years, and in some cases up to 9 years, remaining dependent on their mother for a total of 7 to 10 years before becoming fully independent. This is the longest period of maternal dependence among non-human mammals. The average interbirth interval of 7–9 years is also a record among land mammals. A female typically produces only 2 to 4 offspring in her lifetime.
Even more striking, the orangutan mother shoulders every responsibility alone. The species is largely solitary, and fathers play almost no role in rearing the young. The mother carries, protects, nurses, shares her nest, and teaches all survival skills by herself. In the early years, the infant remains in nearly constant bodily contact with her. This form of complete single motherhood is rare among other great apes such as chimpanzees or gorillas, which live in groups and benefit from indirect support from other members.
The rainforests of Southeast Asia present a challenging environment with irregular food sources and many dangers. Young orangutans learn primarily by observing and imitating their mothers: recognizing seasonal ripe fruits, processing difficult foods (including the use of simple tools), building a new nest high in the trees each night, navigating safely through the canopy, and avoiding predators. Mothers are highly tolerant when their offspring beg for food or cling to them. Research also shows that individual orangutan mothers have distinct parenting styles that they consistently maintain across successive offspring.
The results of this “few offspring – intensive care – thorough teaching” strategy are impressive. Survival rates to weaning reach approximately 91 percent—higher than those of most other large mammals and even exceeding those in many historical human societies.
For these reasons, orangutans deserve to be regarded as among the finest parents in the animal kingdom. This assessment rests on clear biological evidence: a record-breaking duration of care, undivided attention devoted to each child, and the dual role of the mother as both sole caregiver and the only teacher who prepares her young for survival.
