His wife had just given birth to twins.
β
He was a young defensive line coach at Idaho State. His head coach gave him an ultimatum: tell me I'm right about your coordinator, or you're fired.
β
He quit instead.
β
Then he took a job monitoring in-school suspension at a high school. Twelve dollars an hour.
β
A year later he was head coach at Park City High. Then the phone rang, out of nowhere, from a coach at Northern Arizona named Bronco Mendenhall.
β
In his own words: he asked if I wanted to coach the defensive line, when I had really nowhere to go. He gave me an opportunity.
β
Utah hired him. Southern Utah made him a head coach. Urban Meyer brought him back.
β
Then Kyle Whittingham, the coordinator he'd refused to sell out in Pocatello, made him his first defensive coordinator.
β
In 2008 that defense went undefeated and beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. He was a finalist for the award given the best assistant in America.
β
Utah State hired him next. Three winning seasons in the prior twenty-eight years.
β
Two losing years to fix it. Then 7-6. Then 11-2 and a conference title.
β
When Wisconsin called, he phoned every player on his roster himself to tell them he was leaving.
β
Two years in Madison. 19-7. A division title. Then he left it for Oregon State, one of the worst programs in the country. His athletic director never saw it coming.
β
It didn't work. Year three opened 1-5 and he resigned in October, four years still on the deal.
β
Twelve million, six hundred thirty thousand dollars, guaranteed. He signed a paper releasing them from every cent.
β
"How could I wake up every day and look at myself in the mirror knowing I took money from the kids in that program?"
β
Utah State hired him again, then fired him midway through 2020 with three years and $2.7 million left.
β
He refused that too. Roughly fifteen million dollars, turned down twice, because he hadn't done the work.
β
Then a volunteer analyst job at an FCS school. Then a year with no job at all.
β
He is 62. He works at BYU now. His title is Chief Consultant to the Head Coach and Senior Defensive Consultant.
β
Last September the school that fired him put him in its Hall of Fame.
β
Last fall the Cougars went 12-2, their best season since 2001.
β
Find him after practice and he's usually walking off the field, talking to one player.
β
Gary Andersen.
β
Now you see the whole picture.

Urban Meyer shares the 5 traits he used to identify elite recruits.
These are qualities every great player, coach, and businessperson has in common.
"The single most common characteristic of every great player, every great coach, every great businessperson I've ever been around - they just detest losing. Losing makes them ill."
Everyone loves to win, but do you compete and hate to lose?
"Mental and physical toughness. I don't care if you're running a shoe company or whatever. You just gotta be tough."
Toughness requires a willingness to endure and go beyond your current limits.
"You gotta lead yourself, then lead others - in that order. You can't lead others before you lead yourself."
Leadership is action-based. Itβs dependent on what you do, not your title.
"Football is a complicated game. The world's complicated."
It's not just about talent - you have to be knowledgeable and hungry to learn more in your field.
"65 to 75% of the plays Mahomes makes are the broken plays. He adapts."
Successful people are consistently evolving. They are resilient and have the ability to adjust, improve, and constantly grow. The 5 traits:
1. Competitor
2. Toughness
3. Leadership
4. Intelligence
5. Adaptability
Meyer got so committed to these 5 qualities that every coach had to sign their name on the line - committing to them for who they recruited.
Great teams aren't luck. They're built by defining the standard and holding the line.

Sean McVay on CAPABILITY vs. CAPACITY
CAPABILITY: following directions & orders
CAPACITY: ability to use contingency plans & tools to solve the problems
Your scheme matters. Your playersβ ability to solve problems in it matters more.

Sean McVay shares a universal truth about adversity and resilience.
"You're either in it, you're coming out of it, or you're gonna go back into it in a short period of time."
That's the reality. Adversity isn't a one-time event - it's a cycle.
"The separator is people's ability to handle that. How long can you stay in some of those uncomfortable spots and knowing that real growth is occurring?"
The question isn't whether adversity will come. Because it will.
The question is: can you stay in the discomfort long enough to grow from it?
"Adversity's inevitable. That's what's so great about sports. We learn so many things that test you in ways that are reflective of what you go through in a bunch of different arenas."
You don't grow despite adversity - you grow because of it.
The best aren't fearless - they just keep showing up.
