Great that my first TV appearance resonated with our Minister for Climate Change. One point I missed: worsening heat hazards don't have to mean worsening heat impacts. Early warning systems, cooling centres, actively monitoring vulnerable ppl & urban greening. We know they work.
Replying to @jamespeshaw
And this is an excellent overview of how the frequency and severity of extreme weather events like the heatwaves we're seeing in Europe right now, or the massive rainfall and flooding we've seen recently in Aotearoa, are affected by climate change. xitter.cf/NewshubNationNZ/status…

The same extreme fire conditions that led to Australia’s catastrophic “Black Summer” of 2019-20 can form in NZ, shows this new modelling led by ⁦@nathanaelmelia⁩. He discusses the implications here nzherald.co.nz/nz/rising-ris…
My interview with @Jamienzherald on insurance retreat and the folly of expecting a public insurer (like EQC) to start covering private climate risks
What do this week’s troubling new ⁦@NZSeaRise⁩ projections mean for insurance and property values for thousands of Kiwi coastal homeowners? I took a deeper look nzherald.co.nz/nz/climate-ch…

Sinking land and rising oceans could push sea levels in our two biggest cities and many other parts of the country to double that generally projected – and much sooner than we first thought. What does this mean for coastal communities? nzherald.co.nz/nz/rising-ris…

Well done Whakahura researcher @harrinluke and Stuff’s @eloise_gibson for highlighting the need to update our definitions of heatwaves so we can develop early warning systems to ensure vulnerable populations aren’t left on their own in the heat.
NZ will never have record-smashing heatwaves as seen in USA/Canada last month, for physical reasons (rdcu.be/cpVPk). But the health impacts of extreme heat NZ are far from zero, and could worsen rapidly. Preventative actions can be made now, but there's much work to do.

Excellent interview by Sam Dean part of the #Whakahura (Extreme Events and the Emergence of Climate Change) team working on extreme event attribution
.@niwa_nz principal climate scientist Sam Dean says the recent Canterbury and West Coast flooding "will both have been affected to some degree" by climate change. #NZQandA #nzpol

My interview with NZ Herald’s Jamie Morton on #insuranceretreat “In Wellington, only another 10cm of sea level rise - expected by 2040 - could push up the probability of a flood five-fold - making it a one-in-20-year event.”
Thousands of seaside homes around New Zealand could begin to see soaring premiums - or some cover being withdrawn - as early as the next 15 years, a new report finds nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic…

Americans have avoided confronting these changes in their own backyards. The decisions we make about where to live are distorted by politics that play down climate risks, and by expensive subsidies and incentives aimed at defying nature. nyti.ms/3kpB96p via @nytimes

The smoke from the western US wildfires has even reached the Netherlands (see Reeuwijk Lakes below), turning the sky is grey instead of blue. Confirmed to come from there by satellite and lidar observations, it is the layer above 6km height. Made worse by climate change. @KNMI

It's not only consistent, but for many recent extremes climate change is a key driver in the causal chain. @SISeneviratne @Weather_West @gjvoldenborgh
The spate of wild weather this year is consistent with climate change, scientists say, and the world can expect even more extreme weather and higher risks from natural disasters as global emissions of greenhouse gases continue reut.rs/2GNoU56 by @Matthew__Green

Agree with Fredi - it's important that we bring out the causal expectations; not just the consistency argument. The causal relationship is why we expect more of these - it's not just a case of us saying "fancy that - I guess it makes sense..." The science is stronger than that.

Wildfires and other extreme events are neglected in traditional estimates of the economic costs of climate change. It will be hard to develop attributable costs for events such as these, but I'm pretty sure that zero will become a worsening approximation.
There's so much burning right now on the West Coast. Just dreadful satellite imagery.
