Despite its challenges, 2025 saw clean air rise higher on the global agenda than ever before.
More governments stepped up, new global commitments took shape and there was greater recognition for the important role of clean air to protect people and the planet.
I'm sharing the milestones that mattered most in 2025, and where we're focusing our efforts in 2026 to build on this momentum 👇 @CleanAirFund

⚡Did you know that air pollution causes more than one in eight deaths globally, with many millions more living with debilitating NCDs?
💚Clean air interventions are shown to be cost-effective and fast-acting, but air pollution is only beginning to get the policy attention it deserves.

In Bonn this week for the fifth #EUCleanAirForum - where naturally, a major focus is the implementation of the Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD) across Europe 🗺️
🗣️ I enjoyed contributing to the discussions on a panel with Piotr Szymański, Director Energy, Transport and Climate (@EU_Commission), @SvVeldhoven (@WorldResources) and Nadezhda Bobcheva (Dep. Mayor of Sofia) looking at some very concrete actions governments - at the city, regional and national level - can implement.
My key takeaways 👇
• Europe is uniquely positioned to address poor #AirQuality, with a wealth of experts and strong civil society capacity. @CleanAirFund is fortunate to work alongside many of these incredible organisations.
• The revised #AAQD is a transformational opportunity and we're excited to support more action on implementing the legislation in 2026.
• Poland shows how quick progress is possible. #AirPollution levels have come down rapidly through a combination of domestic coal burning bans, heating subsidy schemes, low emissions zones and cross-party collaboration. These improvements demonstrate what other regions might achieve.
• The success of AAQD depends on robust data, inclusive policies and clear communication of the benefits, from asthma reduction to new green jobs.
• Europe is at the forefront of growing momentum on clean air, and sharing its best practice will help to accelerate progress globally.
Grateful for colleagues across Europe for their tireless work and to our grantees incl. @CleanHeatEurope, @UCPH_Research, @lunduniversity, @respireasso, @HealthandEnv, @Umwelthilfe, @cphp_berlin, @transenv, @Green_Europe, @alarm_smogowy, @ForumEnergii 💚#EUCleanAir

Last week, I attended the @MayorofLondon's second Clean Air and Health Summit - bringing together government, NHS, #AirQuality experts, and campaigners. It was a valuable chance to discuss and maximise our collective impact as we all work towards cleaner, healthier air in the UK 🌬️🇬🇧
The timing was perfect, as today @DefraGovUK published its updated Environmental Improvement Plan with a revised PM2.5 target, which will match the EU's ambition to meet interim @WHO air quality standards by 2030! ✅
I enjoyed conversations around how best to keep raising awareness, tackle harmful emissions from woodburning, and using moments like next year’s London Climate Action Week to galvanise further action. I left feeling motivated and privileged to be part of such a strong clean air community in the UK.
Huge thanks to @EllaRobertaFdn for all her work continuing to powerfully make the case for action on #AirPollution, to Mayor @SadiqKhan, Minister Emma Hardy MP, @metecoban92 and @LDN_gov for hosting the event, to Professor Stephen Holgate for chairing, and to all the other brilliant attendees for an inspiring and productive morning 🤝
