Claude Shannon ran his personal stock account at 28% a year for 30 years. He's also the man who mathematically proved the ceiling above every filter the thread above is selling. Both facts have been sitting in the same library since 1948. Shannon didn't beat the market with a smarter moving average. He didn't beat it with a swarm, a neural net, or the sharpest filter of his generation, and he could have built any of them in an afternoon. He beat it because he understood the one thing the industry has been quietly ignoring for 78 years: no filter, no matter how clever, can pull more signal from a channel than the channel actually holds. The market channel is almost pure noise by design. Every real edge gets arbitraged toward zero the moment enough people find it. A better filter doesn't create signal that wasn't there - it rounds noise into a shape that fools you into betting on it. Shannon compounded like that because he was ruthless about which channels still had signal left, and disciplined about how much to bet when they did. The filter came last. It always comes last. Build the filter. It's a fine tool. Just remember there's a ceiling above it no engineering can lift, and the part that finds signal before it decays - that part, you still have to bring yourself. Shannon wrote it down in 1948. It's still free. The lesson has been sitting there for 78 years.

Jonathan Gruber, MIT economics professor: Every quantitative strategy starts with the same problem: what if the person on the other side knows something you don't? This free MIT lecture explains adverse selection, one of the core ideas behind modern market making and quantitative trading. When information is unevenly distributed, the side with less information pays for it. The mathematics behind market making has been public for years. The formulas are easy to find. The hard part is identifying when the flow you're trading against is smarter than you are. Bookmark this before it gets buried in your feed.

Why did you expect something different when he was elected? xitter.cf/indiccollective/status…
Betrayal of Faith: TVK Govt Favors Encroachers of ₹25,000 Cr Temple Land in Karur! In a single day, 3,084 acres of 4 major temples were removed from the prohibited list, effectively handing over temple assets to private occupants. Govt's '1963 Inam Act' defense is hollow. If these were lawfully private pattas, why were they ever in the temple prohibitory module in the first place? The hypocrisy? 500 acres of Vennaimalai temple land remain under powerful encroachers (27 officers, 49 industrialists) despite Court orders since 2019. HC rightly noted: "Poor deity has no voting right. Mighty encroachers have valuable votes." This isn't admin correction, it's electoral expediency. indiccollective.org/betrayal…

I highly recommend this video if you never formally studied general relativity. All of the informal explanations I've heard growing up (e.g. balls bending space) ended up being misleading in ways that gave me a wrong impression of how general relativity works. The first 30 minutes completely changed my understanding.
Adam Brown (@A_G_I_Joe) is back! General relativity is said to be the most beautiful idea the human mind has ever produced. Most of us will never get to fully appreciate its elegance by taking the 20-lecture graduate course Adam taught on it at Stanford. But in the video below, Adam distills the key idea at its heart so clearly and compellingly that even I could keep up lol. At the core of general relativity, Einstein is trying to figure out the principle behind a particular coincidence: that the mass that resists acceleration and the mass that gravity pulls on just happen to be exactly the same. Adam then leads us through the path of insight which Einstein called his “happiest thought.” Then Adam lectures on black holes. First, by showing how even under special relativity you could create a perpetual motion machine if black holes weren't truly black. And then, by explaining why the observations of an infalling observer and a distant bystander to the black hole would be so radically different Adam leads Blueshift, the team at Google DeepMind cracking science and reasoning. Which gave us the opportunity to discuss at the very end how close we are to AIs that could rediscover general relativity from scratch. Stay till the close for some philosophy of science. 0:00:00 – The coincidence that led Einstein to general relativity 0:16:42 – Gravity is a consequence of curved spacetime, not a force 0:31:46 – Why black holes prevent unlimited energy extraction 0:47:12 – Black holes are the ultimate power plants 1:13:50 – What falling into a black hole would actually feel like 1:18:51 – The three ways we know black holes are real 1:24:21 – The first time we saw gravity bend light 1:29:33 – How far can AI get without experimental evidence? Look up Dwarkesh Podcast on YouTube/Spotify to watch. Enjoy!

If the claims about Toyota filing an FIR against Manish Kashyap are true, this will be a first! A car manufacturer suing a consumer for blaming adulterated fuel for damaging his car. Usually, consumers sue! If this case goes to court, Toyota will lose face, and the case.

A world-class jewel
Rock-cut temple! What comes to your mind? Most of us would immediately think of the magnificent Kailasa Temple near Ellora. And rightly so - it's one of the greatest architectural wonders ever created. 🤩 But look at the video below. 👇 This is the Dharmrajeshwar Rock-cut Temple in Madhya Pradesh, a little-known monolithic temple dating to around the 6th–8th century CE. Like Kailasa, it wasn't built by assembling stones. It was carved out of a single rock. Just imagine the vision this required. Before the very first strike of the chisel, the craftsmen had to "see" the entire temple within the rock. What amazes me even more is how rarely we hear about places like this. These architectural marvels deserve to be far better known for the engineering brilliance, craftsmanship, and artistic vision of our ancestors. Perhaps "hidden gem" is the perfect description - not just because it's tucked away, but because so few of us even know it exists. The more I discover such places, the more I marvel at the ingenuity, patience, and spiritual vision of our ancestors. #ThroughMyLens vc : instagram/ministryofculturegoi

A delightful conversation...
NEW: In a landmark 175th episode of Know Time, I interview @vishy64theking - five-time World Chess Champion, first Indian chess grandmaster, author, recipient of the Khel Ratna and Padma Vibhushan and a living legend - I grew up reading about him in my ‘Did You Know?’ books, so even claiming that this was a dream conversation would be an understatement! In this conversation, we explore: - Is chess an artform or a sport or a science? - Do you need any natural ability to become a grandmaster? - Comprehensive breakdown of chess opening theory, comparison of two of the most popular openings: 1.E4 The King’s Pawn Opening vs. 1.D4 The Queen’s Pawn Opening - Chess psychology 101: role of mental warfare, mind games, intuition, intimidation and real-life personality traits, links with general intelligence - The impact of chess engines on the game; is chess facing a crisis? France 24, Deutsche Welle, Bloomberg, Nikkei Asia. Nearly every center-Left "newspaper" in developed countries has taken what I will describe as an explicitly anti-India editorial stance. Are we supposed to look at this as pure coincidence? Is it a pure accident that Pakistanis are being chosen to cover India? And that it is all happening concurrently? IMO this is an infosec operation by western security forces, in coordination with the Pakis. These "newspapers" are simply stenographers now anyway, and as @lsob_ has said before, the purpose of getting this stuff published in "credible" sources like these is to clog the AI pipeline with these falsehoods using "credible sources". AI thinks that "credible source said X" and therefore X must be true. Nothing beyond that. Fascinating stuff. We are also so ridiculously unprepared for tackling info ops that are this sophisticated. Our @MEABharat and security agencies are slow-moving analog institutions in this fast-moving digital world. They'll only realize what's been done to them once the rug has been completely pulled from under their feet...

When we came for OP Rakshak in 1992, Police Stations used to be locked after 4 PM. It’s Army which used to do patrolling and lay ambushes during night. After successful conduct of elections , Army was moved out. In our stay of six months in Punjab, we were fired upon just once by a militant during CASO who was effectively neutralised. There were hardly any militants in #Punjab in 1992.
Indian Army propped up the spine of a demoralised Punjab Police in the decisive phase of militancy and broke its back. Combined with cordons of CRPF and BSF, this is how militancy was combated. KPS Gill made an impressive photo feature. And fawning journalists did the rest.
