The first novel I ever loved was the survival classic Hatchet, but recently I’ve learned that a *lot* of women despise this book, and see it is as something they were forced to read in school to entice the idiot illiterate boys in their English class. I dove into that tension!

Reklam değil ısrarla tavsiye, dip not tatlıda yiyin derim mutlaka.

It is an incredible fact that women in the past had far more children at older ages than women do today, even without the benefit of modern technology. Assisted reproductive technology is supposed to extend the fertility window, and yet childbearing ends sooner now than it did in the past! 1/4 (Cambridge Population Group)

Cristian Mungiu’s newest drama, “Fjord,” stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a conservative, evangelical couple who have recently moved with their five children from Bucharest to a tiny village on the Norwegian coast. One day, after bruises are spotted on one of their daughters' backs, Child Protective Services is called, and they are accused of physical abuse. Their children are taken from them. Some critics of the film, which won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, have accused Mungiu of drifting politically to the right. Some have taken “Fjord” as an embrace of a mealy-mouthed both-sidesism that holds the left to be as susceptible as the right to the traps of ignorance, groupthink, and discrimination. Others have implied that the film exaggerates and demonizes the Scandinavian welfare state’s overreach to an absurdly unrepresentative degree. “To which I can only answer that I’ve seen ‘Fjord’ twice now,” Justin Chang writes. “The reductive generalizations that its critics seem eager to ascribe to it strike me as fundamentally at odds with the angularity, specificity, and darkly comic pungency of Mungiu’s telling.” Read his review: newyorker.com/culture/the-cu…

Virginia Woolf did not put Clarissa Dalloway through an entire existential reckoning over a party for you to be waiting until your life is impressive enough to enjoy. Your life is happening in the unremarkable intervals, you miserable little perfectionist. Go and buy the cake.

Anne Carson. “You could whisper down a well. You could write a letter and keep it in a drawer. You could inscribe a curse on a ribbon of lead and bury it in the ground to lie unread for thousands of years. The point is not to find a reader, the point is the telling itself.”

Anne Carson – awarded the 2026 #NobelPrize in Literature – once described boredom as her arch-enemy. It is a state she confronts with drastic humour and wit. ‘The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos’, published in 2001, tells of a cutting and sardonic row with a deceitful husband, its twenty-nine episodes each opening with lines of verse by the romantic poet John Keats. Keats’s sublime words about beauty being truth are, in brutal yet playful fashion, juxtaposed with this exhausting relationship drama.
