I love serving this church. @FaithPresGF began when the new congregation particularized in the PCA in 1995. In 2007, the church relocated to what was then the Grand Cities Mall (now known as Midtown District), occupying a large office in the profession office wing. In April 2008, the congregation moved into a mall space formerly occupied by a local florist. And then, just over 4 years ago, we moved into this current space (an old Radio Shack). In June 2016, the church decided to transfer into the OPC and was subsequently received as a mission work under Carson/Bismarck (now Mandan). I was called to the pastor on January 15, 2017 and was installed July 31, 2017. May the Lord continue to grant us his mercy and grace in the years to come. If you're ever in the Grand Forks area, we'd love to have you join us for worship!

Holy Father, great is your grace toward us in Christ. You have delivered us from sin and death and have granted us a portion in the promised land of your heavenly kingdom. You have given us the Holy Spirit as an earnest of this inheritance, so that we have assurance that we shall receive it. In the meantime, as we long of that great day, we remain deeply needful of your grace and mercy. Please feed us this morning with Christ through the preaching of your Holy Word. Holy Spirit, grant your illumination on this text, and prepare our hearts to receive it, so that as seed sown in good ground, it may bring forth 30, 60, or a hundredfold as your heavenly wisdom has appointed. Please grant our petition and request for the sake of your Son Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Mark 2:27โ€“28 And he said to them, โ€œThe Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.โ€ (ESV) ----- From the final page of Christianity and Liberalism by J. Gresham Machen: "Thus the warfare of the world has entered even into the house of God. And sad indeed is the heart of the man who has come seeking peace. Is there no refuge from strife? Is there no place of refreshing where a man can prepare for the battle of life? Is there no place where two or three can gather in Jesus' name, to forget for the moment all those things that divide nation from nation and race from race, to forget human pride, to forget the passions of war, to forget the puzzling problems of industrial strife, and to unite in overflowing gratitude at the foot of the Cross? If there be such a place, then that is the house of God and that the gate of heaven. And from under the threshold of that house will go forth a river that will revive the weary world."

Read Barnabas, Justin, & Irenaeus. They taught the same covenant theology as Bullinger & Calvin. They didn't oppose Baptists & Anabaptists because there weren't any! So, no, they didn't explicitly tie covenant to baptism but they did baptize babies and they did teach one covenant of grace, multiple administrations. It's like arguing that Ignatius didn't teach the Trinity bec he didn't use anti-Arian rhetoric.๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
Replying to @RetiredOpinions
Covenantal infant baptism wasn't taught until Calvin. So you have to say the church was wrong about the theology behind infant baptism for 1500 years. That's quite a claim.

What is being done to Elisabeth Elliott post-mortem is part of a larger trend/movement to revise the biographies of famous Christians to make them gay. It's been attempted with Jonathan and David (they weren't just friends), with Calvin, Theodore Beza, and Machen among others. I've responded to two of these cases. See the next post. Notice that Stell is described as a historian. This is an appeal to authority. This is one move. The fact that Stell is a historian means little. Historians get things wrong regularly. They make mistakes and sometimes they just misrepresent things. Another move is to string together otherwise innocent statements or events and to re-contextualize and sexualize them. Ambiguity is key to this type of revisionism. Statements that weren't originally understood to refer to latent homosexual desire are re-interpreted/re-framed to be sexual in nature. Anyone who objects is denounced as naive or a prude. In the current case the agenda seems rather obvious when Elliott's biographer asks why anyone should care that she allegedly had Lesbian inclinations or affairs? Why? Those of us who read or listened to Elliott know that she's being accused of gross sin and hypocrisy. Unlike her biographer, apparently, we know what God's Word says about male and female homosexuality and we agree with Scripture. These are effectively post-mortem charges that cannot be properly tried. This is tabloid stuff at best. A professionally run secular newspaper wouldn't run this sort of story. The evidence is less than thin. That CT ran this story at all says much more about them than it does about Elliott.

Holy God, when you speak, you speak effectually. You created the world from nothing by uttering a word. You sustain the existence of the creation by the word of your power. You create life through speech. And you resurrect the dead by your effectual spoken command of life. You are the God for whom nothing is impossible. Therefore, we ask that you would illuminate the reading and preaching of your word by your Holy Spirit, such that it becomes your Word read and proclaimed, with all of your power and your authority and your goodness and mercy to those who are your own. Convict us, convert us, and consecrate us, according to your eternal will and pleasure in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy Lord, thank you for blessing your people with yourself by means of your Holy Word. Because we are frail and our minds are weak, our ears are dull, and our hearts are cold, we pray for the illuminating light of the Holy Spirit to shine upon the reading and preaching of your word, that we might be moved from our present stupor to a posture of anxious anticipation, such that our hearts and our minds might be further sanctified and comforted to your perfect and good will, to the end that you would be glorified in us in all that we say and do. Please grant, Lord, our petition and our request, for we ask these things in Jesusโ€™ name. Amen.

A wonderful and encouraging book.
โ€œMy thesis in this book is that we must turn from the frantic search for "something more" to "something more sustainable." We also need to be content with his ordinary means of grace that, over time, yield a harvest of plenty for everyone to enjoy.โ€ @MichaelHorton_

Maybe someday.
Carl Trueman on the dangers of the celebrity pastor. This is from 10 years ago now, but is still relevant. It may not be as critical of an issue as it was at the height of the YRR movement and the conference circuits, but there still are individuals who command significant influence โ€” most of their sway these days just comes from podcasts, social media, YouTube, and maybe books, as opposed to the conference circuit model from before. And itโ€™s good that men are gifted and influential, but as Trueman points out, there are dangers in that come with that. Trueman highlights two main issues:ย  - an aspirational model of ministry that is increasingly nothing like what aspiring ministers are actually going to experience in ministry - worldly categories of success instead of faithful categories of success He said he remembers asking students at Westminster Theological Seminary: โ€œWho's been the most influential preacher in your life?โ€ He said, โ€œAlmost never do they actually say, โ€˜Well, it's the man who preaches at my home church.โ€™โ€ Lots to chew on from this clip, but itโ€™s an issue that hasnโ€™t gone away.
