My last act as the 2024 @ASMicrobiology Fenwick Fellow for the Advancement of Civic Science was a talk on civic science at ASM Microbe 2025. Hopefully this is a good primer for those of us worried about the future of science and want to get involved! youtu.be/pzYt8up4CoU

This fee would be by far the biggest move to restrict high-skilled immigration to date. Some may bend over backwards to convince themselves that this would be some moderate compromise short of ending OPT. In reality, this fee would nuke America's largest and most important program for new high-skilled immigrants. The international student pipeline is how the vast majority of top talent first comes to the United States. Per CSET, 72 percent of immigrant founders of top AI companies first came to the country on student visas. OPT is the primary way through which foreign-born employees at places like Tesla, Intel, NVIDIA, Open AI, DeepMind, Anthropic, etc. enter the US labor market. Without OPT, the rest of the immigration system would become less skilled and lower-paid. More H-1B slots would go to IT outsourcers and staffing companies who use the system for cheap labor in mid-skilled jobs. This effect would grow over time, as this fee would deter international students from coming here in the first place. The costs of such a rule, if sustained, to US innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth would be massive. If you've been on the sidelines waiting for the shoe to drop on high-skilled immigration, this is it.
NEW from me: The Trump administration is weighing attaching a $100,000 fee to optional practical training, the program that allows international students to work on their student visas for a time after graduation. Gift link: wsj.com/politics/policy/u-s-…

Relevant now maybe more than ever--there's no one trick to getting science advocacy right! You've really got to know your audience and know how to connect with what's important to them. Facts and stats alone are never going to be enough.
ASM's 2024 Fenwick Fellow Chris Dade discusses his pathway to science advocacy, and gives key guidance on advocating for science and informing science policy: youtu.be/JFvmD-ZxXJk

Sometimes institutions surprise you in good ways, even if it took far too long. This can’t undo the harm already done, but it’s essential for any restorative work in the future – at Wisconsin, USA
Replying to @umjeremy
And just like that: the 304.3 language added that said "the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching" and "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" are not to be clergy are REMOVED from the #UMC. 93%! #UMCGC 🏳️‍🌈
