GRATITUDE.
Thank you to everyone as we remembered and honored the lives and legacies of Zambia’s former President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa and First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa on Saturday, 16th August.
Your prayers, kind and encouraging words, as well as the memories you shared of them mean more than words can say. We are grateful for the love and support from communities far, near and wide. Thank you for standing with us as we celebrated their legacy—a legacy built on integrity, service, accountability, justice, compassion, and a deep commitment to Zambia and its people.
Together, they lived by values that remain our compass today: honesty and courage, accountability, an unwavering commitment to the rule of law, the conviction that prosperity is true only when it is shared, and the belief that strong communities are built on transparency, fairness, and inclusion.
Today, we honor them not only through words, but through the lives we choose to lead—by striving to uphold these ideals as daily realities. We remain anchored in our faith in God, connected to family across Zambia, and committed to peace and unity as they were.
May their spirits continue to inspire peace, unity, compassion, and justice for all.
With heartfelt gratitude.
🙏🏾

LME week, or London Metals Week, gets underway in a weeks time. The week is the traditional starting point for negotiations between copper miners and smelters over the ‘annual benchmark’ for Treatment Charges & Refining Charges (TC/RCs), which are used in long term copper concentrate supply contracts.
Spot TC/RCs are over $250 per tonne & 25 cents per pound LOWER than the 2026 benchmark of $0 per tonne & 0.0 cents per pound (set in November 2025). This is because over the past 12 months the market has entered an unprecedented concentrates deficit.
In other words, instead of paying for concentrate to be smelted, miners are currently PAID BY SMELTERS over $250 per dry metric tonne of concentrate delivered and 25 cents per contained pound of copper refined.
When negotiations start next week, the expectations between the miners and smelters regarding the 2027 TC/RC benchmark will be very far apart.
There is a real chance, for the first time ever, that no annual benchmark settlement will be reached for next year. If that happens, the copper concentrate industry will need to adapt to life without widely accepted annual benchmark terms. This would mean concentrate offtake agreements moving to rolling spot market index pricing.
We cannot understate how significant a change this is.
With no change to the deficit in copper concentrate supply, the negotiation power stays with the miners… so TC/RCs will remain deeply negative.
Privileged to have been a panelist at this year’s Energy Forum for Africa #EFFA on what’s holding back seamless electricity trade in the Southern Africa Power Pool #SAPP.
Compounding infrastructure gaps (generation outpacing cross-border transmission), rules friction (licensing, wheeling charges, approvals), and credit risk (buyers seen as not creditworthy).
I proposed some solutions to consider which would include but not limited to aligning grid codes and market rules using a common minimum standard with a fixed timetable for national implementation—starting with recognising each other’s trading licences and agreeing a common method for wheeling charges.

After many years of not fully understanding the enormous challenges we’re facing in the copper market, we are FINALLY starting to see more realistic price targets.
Last night, analysts at @BMO raised their copper price forecast to ~$18,000 per tonne by 2030… 50% above what the rest of the street believes.
Despite the many factors behind their upgrade, one key catalyst is the “freight train of capex” necessary to support existing mine output.
Copper miners today need to “spend more to stay”… our industry needs to spend considerably more on sustaining capex to offset declining grades as we mine increasingly challenging ore bodies.
But we are still only at the foothills of the Himalayas…

What a privilege to return to the Colorado School of Mines to present at the Payne Institute for Public Policy’s 2026 Critical Minerals Symposium.
Morgan Bazilian and the entire team put together a very important event, highlighting how important these vital metals are to our national security.
The students here at the Colorado School of Mines are some of the brightest engineers I’ve ever had the honor of meeting, and they will undoubtedly become the future leaders of our mining industry here in the USA, and all over the world.
All of us within the Ivanhoe family are deeply supportive of @MBazilian and the mission of the @coschoolofmines and @payneinstitute to serve industry, benefit society, and create a prosperous future through talent and innovation.
We look forward to continuing this open dialogue for many generations to come.

Weeks ago myself & some friends hosted Dr. Duncan Money @mininghistory, an historian specializing in Zambian mining. Duncan has so much depth about the sector & its history which dates back many centuries before colonialism. We must all take an interest in understanding mining, it’s not only the goose that lay our golden egg, we still have lots of minerals yet to be mined #Zambia

It’s easy to take for granted that people are remarkable when they are familiar to you. The first time I realized my Father was brilliant was some time in university. He told me a story about how he taught himself to write code when he was an economics lecturer—so he could automate his marking and grading of student work. That was in the 80s. Automating the grading of students the likes of Mukwandi Chibesakunda, Savior Chibiya and others.
His idea of fun is reading Stephen Hawking and working through the math. He wanted to be a physicist or architect, ended up being an Economist. Writes his Journals in German. Pretty sure he could have been whatever he wanted and have done well at it. Chooses the thankless work of Public Service because he actually believes in the possibility of social flourishing.
Keep doing what you love, old boy.
Zambia’s former finance minister named Africa’s Finance Minister of the Year - mwebantu.com/?p=66772
Yesterday in South Africa, after meeting with the ministers in the morning, I delivered a guest speech at the Spier Dialogue Event on “Policies for Growth in Africa” in Cape Town, where I reiterated that Africa has no reason to remain poor. Our continent is blessed with enormous natural and human resources. Africa holds huge mineral reserves, possesses over 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, and has the youngest population globally. These are not liabilities; they are strategic assets for economic transformation.
Yet, despite these enormous advantages, Africa continues to lag due to poor leadership, corruption, weak institutions, and the high cost of governance.
Africa must now look ahead and move forward with decisive action. We must shift our focus from politics and endless election cycles to productivity, development, and nation-building. The future of Africa lies in investing aggressively in Human Development Index (HDI) indicators, especially education, healthcare, and lifting people out of poverty.
Today, many African countries still record low life expectancy, high infant mortality, widespread unemployment, and growing poverty levels. Small and medium-scale businesses, which should be the engine of growth, are collapsing under harsh economic conditions, poor infrastructure, and policy inconsistency.
What Africa needs is competent leadership with the capacity, compassion, and commitment to prioritise production over consumption, and development over politics. If we invest in our people, strengthen institutions, reduce the cost of governance, combat corruption, and create an environment where businesses can thrive, we can build a more productive, secure, democratic, and prosperous Africa that works for all its people.
A New Africa is Possible. -PO
