does community culture matter more than technical infrastructure in crypto cycles?

Launching a million-dollar memecoin purely based on your founder's hairline:
"Based God launched in 2023 before there was really like a first meme season or Base season in general. Obviously it's heavily framed around just the jokes of being bald, inspired by Brian, mainly because he's been leading the charge in crypto for several years, especially on the policy side and helping us get out of... the craziness from 2022, 2023..."
Peak crypto logic: regulatory policy wins instantly justify a bald joke token.
NOBODY more dedicated to bringing the trenches back rn than @jessepollak
Bro started learning CHINESE to get the Asia Cabal on Base 😭
Jesse finding out a bald CEO meme coin hijacked Base's launch while he's chilling at the beach:
"Before we even technically launched, memes started to define what the chain was going to be like. I remember Bald happening. I was at the beach... someone messaged me and they said, 'There's a meme coin on Base and it's going up. It's Bald, it's after Brian.' And my first reaction being like, whoa, like this is out of my control. This was not part of the plan."
Decentralization means realizing your life's work is now a meme about your boss's head.
Today during the @base summit had a chance to ask @jessepollak how do they plan to win attention in memecoins when Coinbase distribution alone isn’t enough
His answer makes me think we might have a base szn coming soon 👀
calling losing control of your network a "beautiful start":
"Instead, it was the community, just doing their thing and proving to the world that Base wasn't going to be a fully controlled, fully permissioned network, instead it was going to be for everyone. And that was a beautiful start."
PR spin for "we had zero control."
calling degenerate token gambling "doing the hard work":
"whether you're a funny, weird, culture meme, or whatever kind of meme you are, you belong here. the traders who are backing these memes, you are doing the hard work of helping the market figure out what's valuable... and we're going to do everything we can to back you."
trading shitcoins is officially a blue-collar job now.
How did Jesse react to the first memecoin going live on @base?
“It was the Saturday before the network was supposed to launch, and someone messaged me and they said, there’s a meme coin on base and it’s going up.
It’s bald:native, it’s after Brian.
And I remember my first reaction being like, whoa, like this is out of my control, this was not part of the plan.
And it went up and it went down and there was, you know, drama and there was excitement.
And I think as I reflect back on that and as I processed it in real time, the thing that I felt was, wow, this is beautiful because when we talk about base and we talk about building a global economy and we talk about permissionless ecosystem, this is before we even have gotten started showing the world that that’s what base is.
It wasn’t planned. It wasn’t in our control. It wasn’t a thing where we were like, yeah, this is, this is what we’re going to do.
Instead, it was the community, just doing their thing and proving to the world that base wasn’t going to be, you know, a fully controlled, fully permissioned network.
Instead, it was going to be open. It was going to be for everyone.
And that was a beautiful start.”
asking a crypto founder if anyone actually cares about boring tokenized bonds instead of dog coins:
"I don't think memes are going anywhere. People love memes. It's been a defining characteristic of the internet. Meme coins have proven product market fit, there's millions of people who've interacted with them and hundreds of thousands of people who trade them on a regular basis."
government bonds never stood a chance against an animated animal token.
Jesse on shaving his head BALD when Base crossed $10B TVL 😳
“Like shaving my head and going bald when Base crossed ten billion TVL.
It was a commitment that I made, and I put it on the bald list, and that was like a weird kind of scary thing to do.
We filmed it.
It felt weird to have a bald head.
I feel like it’s those kind of moments where it’s like, okay, we’re doing this.
And so, yeah, I love it.
Watching in excitement, like, wow, he’s actually shaving his head.
Thanks for sharing that. It’s a glimpse into really Base history, Base culture, Base heritage.”

Base founder admitting his own community is completely dependent on Coinbase noticing them:
"I think Coinbase is not everything. One of the problems that the Base community has run into is it has felt almost like if Coinbase doesn't list something, or if Coinbase doesn't engage or tweet, that's the end-all be-all... My goal is to tear that down. What the end game's got to be is us building virality that's native to Base that happens across the entire on-chain economy, that sucks people in from off of Coinbase."
when your entire ecosystem's roadmap is just begging your parent company for a retweet.
Jesse is learning CHINESE with AI so he can talk to traders about Base
“And so that just really stuck with me, and over the last two or three weeks, I’ve just been spending more time with those folks, trying to speak a little Chinese on the internet, thanks to AI, which I can now do, and just figuring out what folks are interested in, where they’re seeing energy.
And I think it’s exciting to see people start to turn the corner on Base and feel like, oh whoa, there’s trading opportunities here, there’s opportunities to make money.
And I think that one of the things that may kind of cement that is, we’ve had a lot of memes culturally that I think have originated in Western communities on Base.
They’re in English, they’re primarily English memes.
I’m excited for us to see…”
@jessepollak is actively learning CHINESE in order to onboard Asia to @Base 😳
