BREAKING: US Congress escalates pressure on Asim Munir regime
44 US Congressmembers write to @SecRubio on Pakistan's "escalating crisis of authoritarianism"
They call for targeted sanctions in response to "Asim Munir’s central role in driving Pakistan’s crackdown on dissent"

🇵🇰 #Pakistan: I am deeply concerned by reports that human rights lawyers @ImaanZHazir and @AdvHadiali were denied access to their lawyers and objected to the manner of their presentation during proceedings inside Adiala jail, prompting the defense team to walk out.
Jail trials must not undermine fair trial guarantees, access to counsel or the effective right to defense.
Criminal charges should never be used as punishment for freedom of expression and human rights advocacy. (1/2)

Pakistan - State of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, imposition of governor rule and the deployment of armed forces
Reports of arbitrary detentions of key leaders – including the provincial chief minister – and internet disruptions across the province raise concerns about the proportionality of these emergency measures. While states may, in strictly limited circumstances, derogate from their human rights obligations to respond to a public emergency that threatens the existence of the nation, emergency measures are not a blank cheque to crack down on human rights, silence dissent, or concentrate power.

As Pakistan’s government arrests opposition leaders and suspends an elected provincial government, President Trump continues to embrace its military chief.
The United States should stand with the Pakistani people, not enable political repression. We must press for the release of political prisoners, including Imran Khan.

❗️ SAY IT WITH US: "U.S. foreign policy is not and has never been motivated by human rights or democratic values!"
Glenn Greenwald and Erik Sperling discuss two cases that explode this myth:
"Saudi Arabia tends to be the most prominent example, but Pakistan is such an important one as well."
"We don't even make any pretense about the fact—and, again, this was done under Biden—that you have this incredibly popular leader," Imran Khan, "who was democratically elected."
"And because that will of the Pakistani people didn't serve the American and Israeli vision of that region, we just said, 'Yeah, get rid of him and we'll support this military junta.'"

🚨🚨 Another new low for Pakistan! The brother of a sitting Chief Minister has filed a habeas corpus petition over the CM’s disappearance. More than three days have passed, and he has yet to be produced before a court.
Under the Field Marshal and his cronies, Pakistan has officially become a nation of “missing persons.”

BREAKING 🚨🚨🚨🚨 Pakistan's US-trained regime reportedly using live fire to put down the historic pro-democracy protests
@State_SCA @CIA @CENTCOM
@NATO @EUatUN must condemn & cut all ties with dictator Asim Munir or be complicit
#SOSPakistan
Horrifying footage appears to show police firing directly at PTI protesters, leaving civilians wounded. Why? Demanding the release of their elected political leader and standing by democracy.
Those responsible for ordering and carrying out this brutality must be held accountable. Relentless bloodshed and fearmongering from Asim Munir’s petrified regime. Scared people often lash out with the most cruel brutality, and that’s what we’re seeing here. A man terrified to lose power, and terrified of his own people’s will.
The world must watch and take action. We absolutely must take a united stand against tyranny and evil.
When a regime fears the will of the people, it resorts to force. Pakistan’s military rulers are dismantling democracy because they cannot win it. Washington must stop providing political cover for this authoritarianism.

“Amid mass protests calling for his release, Amnesty International has argued that Pakistani authorities have weaponized criminal proceedings to keep Khan out of power and crack down on dissent.
After the emergency measures went into effect this weekend, the internet monitoring organization NetBlocks reported major disruptions to internet service in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Mobile phone networks have reportedly been disrupted, public transit closed, and several roads across the province shut down.”

🇵🇰 “A Coup Dissguised as Emergency": Pakistan suspends Imran Khan's party's provincial government
President Asif Ali Zardari declared a state of emergency on Sunday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a northwestern province bordering Afghanistan and the only one governed by Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The order removed its chief minister and cabinet, and a federally appointed governor will run the province for an initial six months. Islamabad accuses the provincial government of failing to confront militant attacks.
The move came a week into a PTI march on Islamabad demanding Khan's release. The army was authorized to deploy across the province, and phone and internet service was cut in the provincial capital, Peshawar, and in Swabi, according to local media.
PTI says ousted Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has been detained. A party spokesperson called the move "a coup disguised as emergency."
🇵🇰 Pakistan has placed a northern province under emergency rule on Sunday, the president's office said, following anti-government demonstrations by supporters of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and militant violence in the northwest.

As the military removes the one elected government in Pakistan, a periodic reminder that both @commonwealthsec and @EU_commission @EUPakistan colluded with the military junta in suppressing reports on the rigged 2024 elections. Madam @vonderleyen recently spoke of “shared values” after meeting PM @CMShehbaz and @SGCommonwealth loves to throw out the red carpet for @MIshaqDar50 whenever he holidays in London (which is a lot).
