Why the XRP bug stayed hidden for 11 years. The flaw could have let an attacker create new XRP, against a fixed supply of 100 billion. The XRP Ledger Foundation says normal activity never came close to triggering it. It took hundreds of deliberately built operations. The ledger's own checks missed it too. Ether traders got wiped out harder than bitcoin. About $356 million of ETH positions were liquidated in 24 hours, more than bitcoin's $298 million. Bitcoin's market value is more than five times larger. Across the market, $1.19 billion was liquidated, and over $1 billion of it was longs. A bug could have created XRP from nothing. Researchers found a flaw in the XRP Ledger's payment system that dates to 2015. One payment could have made new, spendable XRP without the sender funding it. That breaks the fixed supply of 100 billion. RippleX fixed it in xrpld 3.4.1 on Sept. 25 and found no sign it was exploited on any public network. Does a fixed supply mean much if the code can miscount it? Swipe through. Bitcoin slips under $84,000 as oil jumps. BTC touched about $83,840 after trading near $86,600 on Tuesday. Brent rose to about $101.50 as Iranian attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz stepped up. The 10 year yield climbed to 5.31% and the dollar strengthened. FinCEN drops its crypto mixer rule. The US Treasury bureau withdrew two proposed rules on Monday. One covered unhosted wallets, proposed in December 2020. The other covered crypto mixing, proposed in October 2023. FinCEN said the mixer rule "could have a chilling effect on legitimate activity." OKX and NYSE's parent want tokenized stocks onchain. Their joint venture, OKXICE, has told the SEC it plans a tokenized stock trading venue. The public notice dated Oct. 4 lists 63 proposed symbols, from Nvidia and Apple to Coinbase and Circle. Trading would run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, against stablecoins.
