❓ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A MAN CHOOSES TO PRESERVE A NATION’S MOST DIFFICULT MEMORIES? 🇸🇱
He creates a space where visitors can remember, reflect, learn, and heal.
At the Sierra Leone Civil War Museum, memories of Sierra Leone’s 11-year civil war are preserved, not to reopen old wounds, but to ensure that the stories of the past are not forgotten.
Read our latest blog post and go watch our YouTube video, as @JKaifala the Chairman of the Monuments and Relics Commission and Principal of the Center for Memory and Reparations, shares his thoughts on the importance of preserving these memories, because a nation that remembers its past can better understand its journey towards peace and national development.

Peace is not simply the absence of war. It depends on the ability of societies to confront disagreement without violence, protect human rights and dignity, and keep dialogue open when tensions rise.
Today, conflict, displacement, discrimination, hate speech, backsliding on rights and polarization are fracturing communities and eroding trust.
On this #InternationalDayOfPeace, @UNESCO calls for greater investment in the institutions, skills and relationships that allow societies to address tensions before they turn into violence.

When we built the Sengbe Pieh Academy in Lungi, Sierra Leone, I didn’t write a school song. I chose an old Catholic hymn: The Servant Song. As another cohort graduated yesterday, I reflected on my choice of a school song.

They waged war and made children fight their battles. These children, who are now men, live with the demons that entered them.
We tell these stories so that this country will never again resort to this.

Yesterday, Field Marshal Lord David Richards paid a courtesy call on the Vice President of Sierra Leone, marking a moment to reflect on the country’s remarkable journey since 2000 and the enduring partnership with the United Kingdom.
In recognition of his leadership during Sierra Leone’s civil war, Lord Richards was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel the nation’s highest honour on behalf of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio.
This honour speaks to the lasting gratitude of the Sierra Leonean people and underscores the UK’s role in supporting peace, stability, and recovery at a defining moment in the country’s history.
🇬🇧🇸🇱 The UK remains a proud and committed partner to Sierra Leone, working together for a future of shared prosperity.

We welcome Field Marshal Lord David Richards to Sierra Leone.
In 2000, his leadership during Operation Palliser helped protect Freetown at a critical moment and supported the restoration of peace during the civil war.
From Sierra Leone to Afghanistan, and later as UK Chief of the Defence Staff, Lord Richards’ career reflects service, responsibility and decisive leadership.
Today, we recognise both history and progress and the strength of the UK–Sierra Leone partnership.
