Efiko’s poetry editor reviews NLNG’s Nigeria Prize for Literature 2026 shortlist.
In what's still a surreal career highlight, proud to share that the good doctor and mentor, @JollyPaps1, and I, sat for a conversation on this young writer's journey. A full circle moment for so, so many reasons.

running, all our turning &
turning & turning
on the devil’s stage, ribs

The nature of New Nollywood stardom suggests that none of the (younger) actors in ATCJ contributed box office numbers of high significance to its 1bn naira revenue.
Like Funke Akindele, like Marvel: put anyone in costume, in those roles, it'll work. Funke is the sole superhero.

Our lack of generosity towards the vulnerable, the elderly and animals is why we ascribe negativity to things we don’t understand.

Mainstream Nigerian cinema is bringing back the Colour Nollywood fronted by EbonyLife & Ndani TV a decade ago. It's left Gritty Nollywood & Party Nollywood. [Clown Nollywood is always in season.]
Looks like the only thing the industry is scared of doing is Intelligent Nollywood.

I found some time during my leave to write something a little more personal. For Efiko Magazine, I reflect on the Jason Arday tragedy, the burden of Black excellence, and what it means to carry the weight of representation in spaces where one’s successes and failures can so easily be made to signify more than oneself.
I’ll drop the link in the comment section.
Excerpt: “(T)here is an uncomfortable part of the Arday story that cannot be ignored. His public reputation had been built partly around an exceptional biography and around the label “Cambridge’s youngest black professor”. That label itself reveals the psychological trap at the centre of black excellence. His age at appointment had no bearing on the quality of his scholarship, yet it became part of Cambridge’s marketing. Arday, the institutions that celebrated him, and the media that amplified his story all participated, to varying degrees, in turning one man into a racial symbol.”
