Just back from @IAC2026Antalya. We were ready to dive back into space... and then we saw the @Tesla Roadster doing a mid-air kickflip ๐๐
We couldn't ignore it - itโs the perfect use case for LunCoSim. We built this moving model from scratch with a single prompt.
Next week, we tackle the physics: rigid-body, thermodynamics, valve electronics. While we share our IAC takeaways, the model will be cooking in the background.
Engineers: how would you approach the thruster control logic? Drop your thoughts๐

๐ป What we do
LunCo makes open-source simulation software for lunar mission engineering. It runs on an ordinary laptop and lets a team run a mission together: driving rovers, managing power and comms, coordinating a lander โ so lunar ops can be tested before hardware.

The rover shall operate for five days without external power.
In SysML v2 that is a requirement.
In Modelica it becomes equations โ sun angle, battery state of charge, the draw from driving and comms.
In USD it becomes a place: a slope near the pole, at an hour when the terrain casts a shadow across the panel.
Only the 3 step tells you whether the 1st one holds, because the shadow is part of the physics.
It is still an answer under your assumptions, not a validated design.

๐ข Is anyone here attending the American @modelica & FMI Conference 2026 in Atlanta?
Our team is looking for someone who will already be at the conference and would be interested in presenting our open-source simulation platform on our behalf.
If youโre attending, please send us a DM. RT ๐ซถ๐

Our IAC session is now an official International Moon Day 2026 event.
IMD runs worldwide JulโOct under the UN proclamation, organised by @MoonVillageAssn
Antalya, 7 Oct: bring a laptop, take a role, and the room runs a lunar surface mission together in our open-source simulator. Free.
Same event, one registration โ the IMD listing just puts it on the global map.

Summer Space School: wrapped
LunCoSim's first external stress test โ driven for a week by testers aged 15 to 50. Real bugs filed, physics validated against real LRO terrain, first-day operator curriculum proven in the wild.
Plus one moment for the history: full mission simulation, 250 participants, run 55 years to the day after the first drive on the Moon โ on the same terrain.
The operator pipeline is open. Free, open source: โญ๏ธ

Meet LunCoSim: an openโsource, Rustโbased simulator for lunar & orbital mission engineering. Multiโphysics (electrical, thermal, propulsion, GNCโฆ) is described in Modelica and compiled inโprocess by rumoca.
The kicker? Edit your assembly and it regenerates + recompiles on the flyโno restart. USD prims name Modelica classes, connections become connect() equations. Seamless.

For high-fidelity simulation we generate modelica models on the fly.
The model is being tested near Apollo 15 landing site.
Everything nominal, except rover can move with battery depleted. But it turned out to be a feature - motors have unlimited energy for easier of testing.
PS The model has around 100 trackable parameters

Today LunCoSim met its toughest users yet: the Summer Space School - 250 participants, and the first operator cohort at the console this morning.
Fewer than 10 machines have driven on the Moon in 55 years. Dozens launch this decade. Someone has to train the operators.
The part we care most about: this is LunCoSim's first external stress test.

Not because it's a balloon.
Because it runs entirely in a browser.
What you're looking at isn't an animation. The balloon's behavior emerges from a Modelica model that combines Newtonian gravity, Archimedes' buoyancy, the Ideal Gas Law, a standard atmospheric model, quadratic drag, and first-order thermal dynamics. Lift, drag, air density, and atmospheric conditions are continuously solved in real time.
Change the model, and the balloon behaves differently.
Change the environment, and the mission changes.
But the balloon isn't the interesting part.
The interesting part is that it's just one component inside a larger simulation.
You can launch multiple balloons, attach sensors and communications equipment, connect them to rovers, and watch the entire system interact in real time.
Need a communications relay for a rover? Attach a transmitter to a balloon.
Need multiple balloons working together? Launch multiple balloons.
Need multiple engineers collaborating on the same mission? Send them a link.
Because the entire simulation runs in the browser, multiple people can join the same world, interact with the same systems, and experiment together in real time.
No installation.
No setup.
No screenshots being emailed around.
Just physics, models, and collaboration.
Today it looks like a simple red sphere.
I see a future where physics-based engineering simulations are shared as easily as Google Docs.
And this red ball is one small step toward that future.
P.S. The second screen shows part of the code driving the simulation.
