Two things I often say in my classroom:
1. It's okay if you're wrong. I just want to know what you're thinking.
2. Remember, we're on the same team. I'm here to help.
As I move into a week since my @vupeabody student teacher left, I am grateful for the work that he did in the classroom. I used to find teaching proofs a challenge to help students understand. Now I don't. I learned a lot from him. I hoped he learned some from me. #grateful
#tspotter @NashSevereWx Snow accumulation so far in South Nashville.
I love biking to work down Nolensville Pike. #commutebybike
We’re excited to help everyone using Nolensville Pk be safer, as @NashvilleDOT uses local funds I fought for to match a federal Safer Streets and Roads for All grant.
We’re keeping teachers safe as they try to be less traffic thanks to support from @SecretaryPete and @USDOT.

Look it's @CalcuChris !! And funding for safer roads so I don't die getting to and from work. (And also me, but mostly @CalcuChris and funding for safer roads).

A colleague taught me to always start the first day with math, and then spend the time students are working going around the room and asking students their names. That way you never start the year getting someone's name wrong.
Pronouncing students' names correctly means more to students than educators may think. edweek.org/leadership/6-teac…

I must impart to all of you the best advice I have ever been given. It works for everyone regardless of ideology.
“Listen. Listen to people’s words. Listen to people’s actions. They tell you everything you need to know.”
Notice the advice above didn’t say judge. Just listen.

What if instead of helping some students leave their "under-served schools" (while ignoring most of the students there) we - and just hear me out here - stopped under-serving those schools?

I sponsor the national honor society of mathematics at my school. When I was first asked to help with this club, the attitude of the club was "I'm in it cause I deserve to be in it."
Students never wanted to ask for help in math. They think it is sign of weakness? The number of students who wanted tutoring has risen dramatically since though. I never knew I would have so many students wanting math tutoring. And I have countless more tutors wanting to help.
All that to say. Students will rise to the occasion. You just need to continuously challenge them to be better. Set the bar high. They will reach for it. It might take time, but they won't disappoint. #whyIteach
