Nicely written, Shrey (@shrey_twr )! So true!
This semester I am TAing 17-313, the undergrad software engineering course at CMU.
I built an autograder for the course... with AI writing every line of the code. It got me thinking about what's left of software engineering now that coding is automated away.
I jotted down my thoughts here: thelastsoftwareengineer.subsβ¦
If you haven't already, you should apply! Come work with Oana (@oanacamb), she's a wonderful advisor doing lots of awesome stuff!

Congratulations, Wenxi (@WenxiWang4), Yiling (@yiling__LOU), Darko, and team! Very much deserved and such a great paper! π
Excited to share that our paper on re-evaluating LLMs for equivalent mutant detection received the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at ISSTA 2026! ππ Huge thanks to our amazing student interns and my wonderful collaborators, Darko and @yiling__LOU ! So grateful for this fantastic team!

Really excited to talk about Bugeoisie at ISSTA'26 this Friday (10/9), 2:25pm PT, in Junior Ballroom 1/2!
This time Darko drew the short straw so he'll be presenting π
but we'll be in the room to support him! #issta26 #issta #sigsoft @issta_conf

I've written 70+ recommendation letters for students applying graduate programs in my career. This is the saddest one I have to redo.
// A former undergrad student got denial of entrance with a 5-year ban, when flying to the US for PhD study. As usual, no reason was given. I can't imagine what he have gone through.
A super cool project by some of my favorite researchers. Awesome job, @Cat_overflow, @xu_dong_sun, @tianyin_xu , & team!
We built a TLA embedding in Verus and used it in Anvil to prove liveness of Kubernetes controllers. @Cat_overflow has now turned it into a standalone library: github.com/anvil-verifier/veβ¦
Give it a try if youβre building verified systems in Verus and want to prove liveness.
Weichen (@weich_li) and the rest of our gang just released some pretty amazing work. This #ICML26 paper introduces Generative Code Representation Learning (GCRL), a new and effective technique that trains models to generate semantically equivalent code en route to optimizing it. Come chat with her next Wednesday (07/08) at 5 p.m. in Hall A (#4014). π₯πͺ
Thrilled to share our #ICML2026 paper, SemRep : Generative Code Representation Learning with Code Transformations! I will present it on Wednesday (5:00 PM β 6:45 PM HALL A #4014) and also Friday (DL4C Workshop). Happy to Chat!
What makes a good code representation? π€
Not just for code generation, but also for code reasoning, editing, agents, and all applications where code is the key modality.
We identify 4 critical requirements and propose SemRep, a new training paradigm with Generative Code Representation Learning.
