Kenya was the place to be! 17 was the number of competition and consumer protection authorities from COMESA Member States, present at the annual training of case handlers organised by the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission ("CCCC"). The 2026 training was a product of a partnership between the CCCC and European Union (EU), and funded by the EU under the Competition and Consumer Product Safety Technical Assistance Project to the COMESA region, implemented by GOPA Pro. The discussions at the training were not only enriched by the experts provided under the partnership, Member States and CCCC officials present but also by the contribution of experts from Africa and beyond.

"A trained and capable workforce is fundamental to the success of Competition and Consumer Authorities,"
Dr. Willard Mwemba stated this at the Annual COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (CCCC) case handlers workshop taking place in Nairobi Kenya from 7 to 9 October 2026. Dr Mwemba observed that building technical expertise and institutional capacity enables Authorities to investigate and address increasingly complex anti-competitive conduct, mergers and consumer violations more effectively and efficiently. Ultimately, stronger institutions contribute to the development of fair, competitive and transparent markets while safeguarding consumer welfare, supporting economic growth and advancing regional integration. Dr. Mwemba paid a moving tribute to names he termed remarkable and extraordinary in the field of competition law and suggested to constitute a Committee of Elders who should continue imparting their invaluable knowledge and wealth of experience to the next generation of competition enforcers. He singled out the following names:
1. Professor Bill Kovacic
2. Judge Dennis Davis
3. Dr. George Lipimile
4. Professor Richard Whish
5. Professor Eleanor Fox
6. Professor Frederick Jenny
Dr. Mwemba expressed his deepest appreciation to these remarkable people for the service rendered to society through their works.
