If this was Scott Walker instead of Tony Evers, this story would be a headline story in every newspaper across the State every single day. Since it is Evers however, there is relative silence and apologist coverage.wisconsinrightnow.com/2022/1…

And this is where the dishonest nature of this group came into play.
The Evers maps did, in fact, contain numerous examples of partisan gerrymandering -- and this group helped provide cover to the Gover.
Here is an example we've used in the past of an Evers gerrymander.

The Princeton project gave Evers's maps an 'A' rating for partisan balance.
SCOWIS originally adopted those maps but SCOTUS sent them back, asking for evidence the Evers maps didn't violate the Voting Rights Act by adding a 7th majority-Black Assembly district in Milwaukee.

I'm shocked to learn that a group claiming to be against gerrymandering would collude to manipulate data. Absolutely shocked (sarcasm).
So, it appears @princetongerry was manipulating data to benefit Democrats. They gave @GovEvers an "A" grade for his unlawful map. Is anyone going to ask if Evers had contact with @SamWangPhD?

People who believe that the maps drawn by the Republican legislatures were a gerrymander and that the maps drawn by @GovEvers were not need to rethink things. That belief is either naive or partisan.

Jan 19th🧵 from @CSWisconsin explores why the Evers' map had fatal flaws leaving the leg plan as the best remaining alternative before the court.
I have previously outlined flaws in the leg plan, but noted they are not fatal. Thus, the success chance of DEM appeal is very low.
Today's 🧵... Redistricting oral arguments happening before the SCOWIS today. Our Executive Director @joeminocqua conducted an extensive analysis of the 6 maps under consideration.
Summary: They all have flaws. But the Legislature’s map performs the best on the legal criteria.

NEW: Wisconsin Supreme Court selects legislature's maps. "the maps proposed by the Wisconsin Legislature are race neutral. ...we adopt the state senate and assembly maps proposed by the Legislature for the State of Wisconsin."

If given the opportunity, perhaps the leg could also improve on their core retention numbers.
Replying to @joeminocqua
The Legislature could also fix its own flaw. As their counsel noted in a prior brief, the line between AD10 and AD11 could be moved to avoid the packing problem found in the legislative plan.

Would "non-partisan" reform violate the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause as badly as your maps?
Golly folks, we already know the answer: The Gov did create a "non-partisan" commission -- Its maps also violated the VRA and the 14th Amendment.

One under-reported (but noted by @CSWisconsin) aspect of the now-rejected Evers map was that it divided the Oneida Tribal Nation.
The leg map and the maps I prepared for CS keep the Nation intact. Another example of unnecessary harm to a minority community by the Evers map.

We could ask the person(s) who drew the maps why they chose to not follow the Voting Rights Act, but since the maps were drawn in secret...

Re-upping this @CSWisconsin tweet from December. The Evers maps had a fatal flaw regarding the VRA and 14th Amendment. Here is a key paragraph from today's ruling from SCOTUS:

VRA – The Common Sense and Legislative maps clearly do a better job of replicating the Voting Rights Act districts approved and drawn by the Court in 2012. The CS map is not before the court, however. This leaves the Legislative plan as the clear choice.

NEWS: Democratic Sen. Lena Taylor tells me she WILL SUE to challenge the maps created by Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and selected by WI Supreme Court. Venue of her suit TBD.
One Wisconsin Democrat says African American lawmakers should discuss a federal challenge of the legislative maps created by the Democratic governor. "It’s something that has to be talked about," State Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) told me.

Wisconsin redistricting history is ripe with pattern of Dems fighting the efforts to create Voting Rights Act compliant districts in order to create more Democratic districts.

Great reporting from @JasonCalvi. Comments from Dem & GOP electeds & a diversity of activitists w/ deep map-drawing experinece helps deliver the full story on a complex issues.
When @SenTaylor, @joeminocqua, @skchheda, & @WisSenGOP see issues w/ the maps, there's a problem.

🧵Review of SCOWIS oral arguments.
Mathematician’s lawyer argued their map should be picked due to lowest deviation. Court in ’92 Prosser case ruled, however, that under 1% the difference in deviation is so small as to not really matter.
Scientists = 0.74%
Legislature = 0.76%
