Very honored to visit @ucmerced next week to receive the Distinguished Cognitive Scientist Award.
I'll deliver both a talk in the Dept of Cognitive & Information Science , "The Conversational Nature of Language", + a public lecture on The Language Game.

Some more exciting results from the @PuzzleOfDanish project
Conversations are fine-tuned to the specific challenges of context & language used. Interlocutors re-use each other’s words more during affiliative chats vs joint decisions. Challenging sound structures show different trade-offs for these adjustments. doi.org/10.1111/cogs.13387 1/

Over-reliance on English hinders cognitive science: it has led to premature claims of universality (due to over-sampling of English speakers) and limited the cognitive constructs being examined (due to the use of English as a meta-language). doi.org/10.1016/j.tics.2022.…

Saved from #AI?: Language emerges from a continual flow of creative improvisation, not biologically evolved genes or instincts, @MH_Christiansen and a co-author argue in a new book, “The Language Game.” @CornellCAS @CornellPsychDpt #QandA news.cornell.edu/stories/202…

"The data seem to suggest that Danish is fundamentally hard to learn. “
This confirms the intuitions of many non-Danes, and should leave the Danes pondering. Wonderful work @fabio_trecca , @MH_Christiansen, @kristian_tylen and rest of @PuzzleOfDanish! #dkvid.
Very proud of this paper—w/ @kristian_tylen, A. Højen, & @MH_Christiansen—that came out today in Language Learning. It's a review of 15 y of data showing that Danish is hard to learn (even for Danish children!), with huge implications for theories of lang processing/learning. 1/8
