What can India learn from ASEAN’s experience of engaging with China on the clean energy transition?
On 6 Oct, CSEP & @ISASNus co-hosted “Triangulating the Transition: Lessons from China–ASEAN Climate Engagement” at #BKKCAW.
Key takeaways:
• ASEAN has leveraged cross-border grids, Chinese capital and technology while seeking to avoid strategic dependence
• ASEAN could draw lessons from India’s experience with cross-border, bi-directional power trade with Nepal and Bangladesh
• India could offer Southeast Asian producers an alternative export market to reduce over-reliance on Chinese buyers
• Indian companies could invest in ASEAN’s battery recycling ecosystems
The broader challenge: building domestic industrial capacity, strengthening political trust within ASEAN, & engaging with China while avoiding dependence.

Coverage by @BioenergyTimes, @NewsBytesApp & @evehicletalks highlights CSEP’s new working paper by @shyambesu & Kartik Nair. The study estimates that end-of-life EV batteries could yield ~573 kt of recoverable minerals worth ₹1,01,491 crore between FY2026–27 and FY2040–41. But capturing this value will require early investment: the paper estimates 3,315 kt of recycling capacity and ₹55,057 crore in capital investment over the assessment period. Read the coverage:
