Last year, a chemical disaster happened nearly every day in the U.S.
It doesn't have to be this way. Stronger rules and better enforcement can help prevent toxic chemical pollution & protect our health so that all communities can thrive. @project_descend bit.ly/3wABq1F
"As the oil and gas industry tells it, they’re the economic bedrock of the communities across the country where they operate," @project_descend co-founders Jo and Joy Banner write. "But jobs should not come at the cost of our health and safety."

Since this piece published in @OneBreathHOU last year, TPC Group’s Houston plant has reported 5 pollution events during startups, shutdowns or malfunctions. A loophole in the Clean Air Act allows for this pollution—which can go on for hours, days or weeks.

"Advanced recycling" is one of the scariest tricks the chemical industry is trying to play on us this Halloween. Don't let them. Tell @EPA to protect our communities now: bit.ly/3QwTzoH
“We’re sick and tired of being sacrificed for the oil and gas industry to make billions,” says John Beard with the Port Arthur Community Action Network.
On EPA’s opportunity to close loopholes that allow petrochemical facilities to pollute:
Proposed regulations offer hope for communities battling petrochemical pollution. The EPA has an opportunity to limit pollution and protect frontline communities.

A surprise inspection of a chemical recycling plant in Zebulon, NC, found plenty of chemicals, but not much recycling.
In fact, inspectors wrote that the plant "has been unable to demonstrate that it has been or can be legitimately used or recycled."
theintercept.com/2023/09/28/…
Some of the alarming safety risks inspectors uncovered:
400+ containers of hazarous waste on site without a permit. Not a single fire extinguisher in a room w/ open, unlabeled containers of flammable chemicals.
On-site testing found ⬆️ levels of carcinogens in the water & soil.
And this, after plant operators assured neighbors that people nearby - residents of local public housing, kids at a school less than 800 ft. away - had no reason to worry.
