You can be a conservative and oppose the death penalty in modern America. If conservatism includes skepticism of bloated, fallible, and sometimes corrupt government power, there is a strong conservative case for refusing to give the state its most ultimate and irreversible power: executing a human life.

Tennessee's botched execution is a gruesome reminder that the death penalty should be abolished. Here's a 2014 @reason video laying out 3 reasons libertarians oppose it.

The state should not have the power to sentence people to death for the same reason we don’t give the state the power to sentence people to rape. Some punishments are just barbaric and should never be permitted.

That sums it up nicely. The #deathpenalty is not about justice but all about bringing out the worst in man. It is a state-sanctioned permission to rejoice in killing. And I consider it Un-American. #ChristaPike.
This is Christa Pike at 18 years old when she was sentenced to death. She begged for a hug from her mother before she died. She is now 50 and will be executed tonight for the heinous murder she committed with a boyfriend 32 years ago. Christa’s mother drank heavily and used drugs while she was pregnant with Christa resulting in brain damage which caused Christa’s bipolar disorder. Christa was born premature while her mother was drunk and spent weeks in an incubator. Her mother went back to work as a nurse. When Christa was 14 months old, she suffered a seizure. Her mother refused to leave the bar to take her to the hospital. After Christa was born, her mother left Christa and her brother without food, crawling in dog feces, while she drank with her boyfriends. She sent her children away to their grandmother when one of her many husbands didn’t want them around. Her grandmother allowed her boyfriend to orally sexually assault Christa before the child could talk until she began school. He locked her in a dark chicken coop with spiders crawling on her. When Christa’s school became concerned, her mother failed to follow up or prevent further abuse. Christa’s father stole her dog to give to one of his girlfriends when Christa was 6. Her mother allowed her boyfriends to beat Christa and twist her nipples. One beat Christa with a belt and sexually assaulted her. He forced her to watch pornography and look at graphic images. When Christa brought some of the images to school, they called her mother. She did nothing. When the boyfriend was arrested, her mother tried to deny it. When Christa was raped at 11 by a man in the neighborhood, her mother denied it until she developed an infection and the man was arrested. When Christa tried to commit suicide after that, a psychiatrist told her mother Christa was severely depressed and needed help. Her mother denied Christa further help and her bipolar disorder was not treated. Her mother told Christa to have her 20-something year old carnival boyfriend live with them when Christa was 14. She smoked pot with Christa and her boyfriend to bond. When Christa became pregnant by one of her mother’s lovers at 16, her mother convinced her to get an abortion telling her a healthy baby could not be born from rape. When Christa was raped at 17, one year to the day before she committed murder with her boyfriend, Christa’s mother didn’t care. But Christa was happy to see her mother in court during her trial and all she wanted was a hug. When Christa tried to introduce mitigating factors post-conviction, her mother said her daughter told lies and was a problem child since she was 8. Even then, her mother didn’t care about her child who only wanted a hug. Yes, Christa committed an extremely heinous murder at 18 and she will be put to death. But I just wanted to share a little bit of her story with you — especially for all of you rejoicing at her execution. #christapike

Having worked as an attorney in the criminal justice system for 29 years both as a prosecutor and a defense attorney, I am against the death penalty. Christa Pike’s botched execution tonight just reinforces my feelings about it.

This is horrific. As I said in a podcast conversation with @janecoaston and @ebruenig several years ago, I do not have a theological or philosophical objection to the death penalty for particularly heinous murders, but I do object to what the death penalty system has become in the United States. This is brutal and utterly inexcusable.

This is obscene. If we are not prepared to carry out the death penalty effectively, then we just shouldn't do it. This attempt to medicalize the act of execution is actually resulting in torture. They had swift, accurate, and more humane methods in 18th century France.
Unbelieveable. Officials were unable to carry out the execution of Christa Gail Pike, witnesses said, after the lethal injection was administered. Pike appeared to receive 2 doses of pentobarbital, and she was still awake 40 minutes after. Pike is now en route to the hosptial.

Do you want to know why I'm so vehemently opposed to the death penalty? Beyond the moral argument that the state shouldn't participate in the premeditated murder of its citizens, it comes down to a practical truth: the justice system is not infallible, and the cost of its failure is absolute. Over the decades, officially recognized posthumous exonerations have laid bare how racial bias, coerced confessions, and flawed evidence send innocent people to the gallows and electric chair: - George Stinney Jr. (executed at 14; coerced confession cleared 70 years later) - Joe Arridy (severely disabled; coerced confession, pardoned in 2011) - Lena Baker (self-defense ignored by an all-white jury; pardoned in 2005) - Thomas & Meeks Griffin (framed by the actual killer; cleared in 2009) When the death penalty is carried out, "innocent until proven guilty" loses its safety net. An overturned conviction decades too late is not justice. It is an admission of irreparable harm. We know that isn't the case with Christa Pike. Her conviction rests on undisputed evidence, eyewitnesses, and her own full admission of guilt. But a justice system cannot pick and choose when its finality applies. If it cannot guarantee 100% accuracy across the board, the risk of executing the innocent remains absolute. Bottom line: the state should never have the authority to participate in the premeditated murder of its citizens.

In a nation with maximum security prisons and the possibility of making mistakes with death penalty convictions, the death penalty is both unnecessary and inhumane.

With everything happening to #ChristaPike, it perplexes me why anyone would support the death penalty. The government continues to show that is prone to error and is flat out inept when it comes to the most irreversible punishment.
