This Commodore 64 game was developed by the future makers of Command & Conquer, Eye of the Beholder and Dune II! Westwood Associates (Brett Sperry and Louis Castle’s studio) handled development. Design credits include Brett Sperry, Louis Castle, and Darlene Waddington; C64 programming was by Shawn Smith, with graphics by Frank M. Saxon Jr. and Maurine Y. Starkey. Mickey’s Runaway Zoo (1991) is a Disney preschool edutainment title for the Commodore 64 in which Mickey and Goofy help round up escaped zoo animals by spotting numbers. No stress no timer, just charming cute Disney game. Who remembers playing this?

"Another visitor. Stay a while… stay forever!" The C64’s SID chip wasn’t designed for sampled audio. Impossible Mission (by Dennis Caswell for Epyx) worked around that by playing speech through volume-register modulation: the 4-bit volume control was rapidly varied to reconstruct the waveform. The result was surprisingly clear for the hardware and era. In 1984 it felt almost magical to hear actual spoken English coming out of a 64 KB home computer, and was in the realm of "holy crap is there anything the C64 can't do?" when you first heard it back in the day.
