🚨New paper🚨
So excited our research into the impacts of landscape-scale pesticide exposure on bee health is published in @Nature. Huge thanks to my co-1st author @JessKnapp24 and @MajRundlof and all in @poshbee_eu
The paper: shorturl.ac/7cckv
What’s this all about? 🧵

Hey #ESA2024 @ESA_org ! Anyone have any cool “synthesis” projects they’re looking for an awesome place to publish!?! Try @Ecology_Letters!
Let me know if you have something or see something. Would be delighted to consider it.

Smallholder farmers increase reliance on honeybees (in place of diverse wild pollinators) when they shift from subsistence agriculture to cash crops = major implications for the resilience of livelihoods & nutrition. More in our @JAppliedEcology paper: doi.org/10.1111/1365-2664.14…

🔥off the press! Our new paper in @RSocPublishing:
“Extreme heat exposure of host plants indirectly reduces solitary bee fecundity and survival”
We tested whether pollen from heat stressed host plants has negative effects on wild bees. 🧵1/11

Pesticides can be sustainably reduced, but this requires an approach that reconciles the seemingly conflicting goals of food production, environmental protection, biodiversity and human health. tiny.cc/ubv2yz

Pesticide risk during commercial apple pollination is greater for honeybees than other managed & wild bees 🐝
Suggests limiting orchard sprays, while reducing on-farm exposures, won't protect far-foraging bees from off-farm exposures like thiamethoxam

Rethinking pathways to the dioecy–polyploidy association: Genera with many dioecious species have fewer polyploids
By @WilOsterman, Adrian Hill, James Hagan et al.
doi.org/10.1002/ajb2.16318 #botany @wileyplantsci

ALT Photo of Rubus chamaemorus (photo credit: Ellinor Delin) In certain genera, there appears to be a positive correlation between polyploidy and dioecy, but why this correlation occurs have long been a mystery. A case in point is Rubus chamaemorus (in the picture), a circumpolar species comprising male and female individuals, predominantly surrounded by hermaphroditic relatives within the genus. However, the authors show that polyploidy is rare in genera which mainly consists of dioecious species, indicating that polyploidy is favoring dioecy, while dioecy is disfavoring dioecy.

New in @Nature, we show that commonly applied approaches have failed to accurately represent global trends in biodiversity. So what's the problem and what's the solution?

What should you do if you find a bumblebee in bad weather?🤔
DON’T
🚫Take her indoors!
👑Bumblebee queens need to be outside to search for a place to nest. She may already have a nest that she is gathering food for.
🥵A bumblebee will burn more energy if kept warm indoors.
