Thrilled to see our kiddo's first scientific paper now cited! 5 years of longitudinal pediatric wearable fitness data provides incredible info & advice to kids and parents (and schools)! Congrats @ButteKimi (H-index 1)! bit.ly/3EmYQaJ
CONGRATS to our daughter @ButteKimi on her 1st first-authored peer-reviewed publication, this week in #JAMIAOpen! The two of us have used #wearables for many years. She analyzed 5 yrs of our step & sleep measurements & made some amazing discoveries! bit.ly/3Alw72z 🧵👇🏽

League of Legends songs are great! 😊 Love this one more than Legends Never Die, HT @ButteKimi music.apple.com/us/album/rai…
Predicting eclipses is not the only thing science can do. If you loved today, you should see what we have in vaccines & climate change…

It is beyond endearing that Bobak is excited about his robot being in Star Trek when he's already gotten it on Mars, ie the real star trek.
Thank you @StarTrek & @MikeMcMahanTM for making sure our Mars rover is immortalized in animation! Yet another reason to love #LowerDecks!

Thanks so much to the @Stanford team (@SnyderShot, Xiao Li, @Spakho) and @HarkerSchool for helping with the research, especially the IRB approvals & mentorship! And thanks to the reviewers who really helped with the paper!

Lots of lessons for teens, parents & wearable makers. When to charge devices, especially if tracking sleep? Need to ensure child's devices are syncing! Design schedules to make students walk more at school? Adjust stride lengths and nutrition for growing kids! More in the paper.

Most amazingly, our sleep & steps were correlated with each other over 5 yrs! If she stayed up late for homework, it was often the case that one of parents did as well, so both of us got less sleep. And if we parents were out walking on a weekend or vacation, she was there too.

School days were really associated with @ButteKimi walking more, even taking into account week/month long vacations.

Both @ButteKimi and I walked less on weekends (and obviously slept more).

What were some of the findings? As she advanced in grade, she was walking less (no gym required in high school anymore). (But maybe she was getting taller, and that was affecting her calculated stride length? More on that later and in the paper…)

To our knowledge, this is the longest published study ever on wearable fitness devices (especially in #pediatrics), and the first to have simultaneous measurements on a parent and child!

Yesterday, July 25th, would have been Dr. Rosalind Franklin’s 101st birthday. Her contribution to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA often goes unmentioned, but today we honor Dr. Franklin for her crucial discovery. #DNA #Genomics #WomenInSTEM

Spent ~4 hrs volunteering as a runner today at @UCSF to help get our critical healthcare workers vaccinated. Learned a lot about the process. Opened vials good for 6 hrs. Doses have to be used rapidly after being made. We’re doing one per minute. Making progress…
