RUSI was pleased to partner with @CSIS and @UKinUSA yesterday for a conversation with UK Defence Secretary @wesstreeting (@DefenceHQ) on the future of US-UK defence cooperation.
As Europe rearms and transatlantic burden-sharing evolves, the discussion examined how London and Washington can keep deterrence credible.

Great speech by @wesstreeting at @CSIS:
Gravest dangers of 20th century are returning, armed with technologies of the 21st.
Defence spending measures commitment. Defence capability measures credibility.
Advantage to those who can innovate, build, and field capability fastest
Great evening at @PoliticsProse to hear from @HannaNotte on her excellent book - We Shall Outlast Them📚 A fascinating conversation, and a great opportunity to hear Hanna’s insights and reflections first-hand!

Do not blame Ukraine...blame Iran!
True, Gulf crude flows have largely recovered, but Hormuz still matters because tanker, insurance and freight costs remain VERY high (VLCC rates have risen from about $30,000/day in early Jan to as much as $1.3 million/day now—a roughly 43-fold increase!). Also, damaged Gulf refineries from Iran's attacks continue to constrain fuel supply (the global market is now short roughly 6 million barrels/day of refined products).
Today, @csiserep & @CSISEnergy launch the Powering Forward Initiative (PFI) with @gmfus. This five-year research project will explore Europe’s growing role in global energy policy and transatlantic relations, focusing on the intersection of energy, security, and technology.

Burden-sharing signals a new phase in U.S. alliance strategy, yet core goals remain unchanged. With hybrid aggression on the rise and actors like Russia & China exploiting the vulnerabilities of free societies, a strong transatlantic bond is crucial. This session discusses how the 🇵🇱🇺🇸 relationship can help forge a new transatlantic bargain that reflects the fragmented global order and adapts to changing strategic outlooks. #TransatlanticLookout

Warm but tough words from Bridge Colby. He notes Britain has been a “noble exception” to European failures over recent decades to maintain fighting forces, and a “tremendous ally and contributor”. But says, “We want a lot more UK” and “there’s no substitute for greater spending”.

Europe is taking more responsibility, building serious capabilities and keeping a few cards close to the chest.

A very 🇬🇧 tribute to a 🇺🇸 icon ❤️ Here at the Embassy, our flag is at half staff while our thoughts are with Dolly Parton's family, friends, & fans in the U.S., UK, & around the world.
NATO’s move toward a more European‑led model is taking shape.
The challenge for NATO 3.0 is whether Europe can close capability gaps and maintain alliance cohesion as the U.S. assumes a smaller but essential role.

"The share of Americans who believe Washington should make major decisions together with allies rather than go it alone now stands at a 50-year high."
