Stephen suffered with a range of unexplained symptoms before his #leukaemia diagnosis, including nosebleeds, a rash, mouth ulcers, shortness of breath and fatigue for weeks. But his GP brushed these off for other, less alarming conditions.
Stephen had previously undergone surgery to treat prostate cancer, and contacted his oncologist who said that they would ask his GP to carry out a blood test.
It took more than a week for Stephen to eventually get a GP appointment at which blood samples were taken and he was also offered an x-ray. The x-ray highlighted a major infection in Stephen’s lungs and the blood tests set alarm bells ringing in the haematology department at Harrogate Hospital.
Stephen was rushed to hospital where he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (#AML). Soon after his diagnosis, Stephen was moved to a different hospital to start his chemotherapy.
Stephen is in remission and is hoping for a stem cell transplant later this year.
Thank you for sharing your story with us Stephen.
