Fifteen snaps a game. That is what he got on defense as a junior. Fifteen. His high school needed him on offense — he played more snaps at tight end than he did on the other side of the ball, and he was worth it there: sixty-two catches, one thousand one hundred thirty-nine receiving yards, fourteen touchdowns. So defense was the leftovers. Whatever was left of him after the offense had taken its share. Fifteen snaps a game, most weeks. Here is what he did with them. Nine sacks. Twenty-eight tackles. Five tackles for loss. Ten quarterback pressures. Two forced fumbles. Two passes broken up. Read that again and hold the fifteen in your head while you do it. Most edge rushers get sixty snaps a night to find one sack. He was getting a quarter of that and finishing the year with nine. College coaches noticed, which is not the surprising part. The surprising part is who did not make his list. In May he announced his final four: Arkansas, Miami, Missouri, Oklahoma. He is from Rogers, Arkansas, so the home-state school was in it. Two blue bloods were in it. A program an hour from his house was in it. BYU was not on that list at all. He also held offers from Baylor, Kansas State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Everybody wanted him. He had narrowed it to four, and the Cougars were not among them. Then, in June, BYU got him on campus for one official visit. His name is Braxton Lindsey, and on the Monday after that visit he committed to a school seventeen hundred miles from Rogers that had not been in his final four thirty days earlier. He is six foot three and two hundred thirty-five pounds — a true freshman with a grown man's body. Recruiting services listed him as a linebacker. BYU is playing him at defensive end. He was a standout in spring camp. The defensive coordinator noticed. And the room he walked into is crowded with talent, which means the same arithmetic that defined his junior year is about to define his freshman one. Limited snaps. Somebody else's rotation. A role that has to be earned in the margins. He has done this before. Nine sacks on fifteen snaps a game is not a statistic. It is a disposition. It is what a young man does when he is not handed the opportunity and decides that the size of the opening is not the same thing as the size of the outcome. Most people wait for more reps. Some people just make the ones they get count for more. Now you see the whole picture. Commercial autonomous mobility in the Phoenix East Valley will arrive — sooner than most think. For me, it seems like forever... X: @BYUfootball · @BraxtonTrev | IG: @byufootball #GoCougs #BYU #BYUFootball #CollegeFootball #Big12 #HearHim X: @ASCENDING_AZ | nowascend.ing
