Former DOJ pardon attorney Liz Oyer: I was asked to prepare a recommendation for the attorney general that she reinstate the gun ownership rights of the actor Mel Gibson, who lost his right to own a gun after he was convicted of a very serious domestic violence crime. I was told that I should make it because Mel Gibson has a personal relationship with the president and he’s a famous Hollywood actor, and that wasn’t good enough for me. And when I declined to make the recommendation, I was very shortly thereafter fired. And it really just illustrates that everything in this administration is about political favoritism, connections, and business transactions.
